Can you have Pro Tools LE 003 AND Logic 8 on the SAME Computer ( MacBook Pro ) ????

Hello Slutz!

Ok, an update on what I've been up to this summer.....

I had been wanting to upgrade from my Roland Daze, I mean, haze, woops, days..... I love(d) my 1880's and 2480 but, yeah, time to move on.....

So, in May I bought myself:
*MacBook Pro (2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, niiiiiice , 15" Monitor
*Logic 8 (good heavens what a learning curve but FUN!)
*MOTU 8pre (hey I needed SOMETHING to start me off!)
*LaCie Firewire HD (500GB)

I still have:
*Millennia 2 Channel
*Ridge Farm Gas Cookers (4 Channels)
*Ridge Farm Boiler (tasty!)
*True Systems P-Solo
*UA LA-610
*Mics: Blue Kiwi, Neumann TLM193, AKG 414, AKG 451's, Octavas & Superlux Tube Mics (yeah yeah yeah!)

Now I had planned to start with Pro Tools 003 LE, but I got a GREAT deal on my MacBook Pro ($1,500!!!!!!!!); This is my FIRST Mac. I've ALWAYS been a PC guy (I have 6 PC's!!!!). But I not ONE or the other, I love BOTH, but wow on the Mac!

I'm getting an Apogee Ensemble at the end of the month (more on that later)…..so there goes my LOGIC setup! (woo hoo)….

WELL, for this new company I'll be working for; they want me to learn ProTools & Sonar. Some of the clients will require this so it's back to Pro Tools, which is a GOOD thing because I believe you can never learn too much and it's good to have a clue about different formats.

HERE IS THE QUESTION:

Can I install Logic AND Pro Tools on the SAME Mac???

I know it's a dumb question. I know the answer is YES.
Now I wouldn't run them at the same time; I'd obviously only be able to use the Firewire ports on my Mac for one app at a time….. It would take up too much for my processor. I do have an external LaCie drive (7,200 rpm, firewire 800, AV rated etc) so I wouldn't be using my Mac's HD for the audio……so……..I guess a BETTER question would be:

ANYONE ELSE USE PRO TOOLS 003 LE & LOGIC 8 ON THE SAME MACBOOK PRO???? If so, any issues?
Any tips, ie, things to look out for?

ANY tips, help, answers would be much appreciated!!!!!!

PS., I know Sonar can ONLY run on PC unless I get bootcamp, which I don't want to at this time, so SONAR 7 will be going on my beefy PC! Let the sleepless nights begin!

Just an update on this thread....I went through the Apogee Ensemble route and have happily become a Metric Halo user! (Also upgraded my pres: API, Great River & Avedis).....

Now that I've had Logic for a year (& Cubuse for a short while), I've been wanting to get into Pro Tools so I can use it for project that I get contracted for. After going through the threads and talking to distributors, I've been informed by many that you should have Pro Tools dedicated to it's own computer. Some of my recording buddies won't use it anymore because they can't have their DP/Sonar/[insertyourDAWhere] on the same comp because the Digi stuff wants to take over and they end up uninstalling it.

One friend said PT is what the AOL software was to a computer, and after having AOL for many years and (stupidly) DLing their sotware on one of my XP PC's for gits n shiggles last year and having that computer CRASH & SPIT and PISS all over me! Eventually I had to go in and do some MAJOR deleting of folders (yeah, "Uninstall" or removing it via the Control does NOT work with AOL!!!!) to get the fkcu RID of AOL! Yeah, my bud said that PT is the same way! It does NOT play well with others!

So, do I need to get another computer and dedicate it to JUST PT? I mean, I buy a couple of computers a year as it (yes, 1 Mac, 1 PC) just to keep ahead of the fray and have backup systems. But I'd like to have 1 laptop with PT/Logic/Cubase on it that way I can pack it, and throw my Fast Track, Duet, Dongles, mic, cable and headphones in another bag and go to jury duty/family party/on the train/to the pool, whatever! (Shoot, I HATE sitting at my desk all the time!)

Any thoughts?

Yes.

(Sometimes I even have them both running at the same time on the same computer. Not as a rule but I'll launch Logic if I need to grab something from a Logic session. No problem)

Cool! Thanks Bets! I was thinking it SHOULD be ok because after all, companies like Euphonix have went through all the trouble of designing their Eucon protocol to be able to switch between apps like PT & LP8 no problem.

As I've said in another forum, Digi Design is offering it's $200 rebate for the 003 Rack til the end of this month so I went ahead and ordered one from Sweetwater.

So, I'll do the SLUTTY-THANG and actually report if the 003 WILL indeed work rather than ask for help....seems that always works anyways! I'll be getting it on Friday and try to report back by Monday! Cheers!

Just so you all know, I'll be trying the 003 with Cubase & Logic.
Here's the equip I have now:

Mac Book Pro & Mac Mini>

Metric Halo 2882 (w/ current 2d + DSP) & Apogee Duet (for the remote stuff)>

API 10 slotter (w/ API 512's, Great Rivers, Avedis, API 560's)
& Millennia, Ridge Farm, Chandler Germ, LA610)>

We'll see how Logic & Cubase picks up on the 003 aaaaaand we'll see if Pro Tools LE will work nicely with other DAW's on the same comp (I've been hearing some horror stories).......
