USB Ports: How many devices is too much?

How many devices is appropriate to attach to a single USB port?

Also, is there any difference between plugging 4 devices into 4 USB ports on a computer, and plugging 4 devices into one port via a USB Hub?

I'm pretty sure its a maximum of 127 usb devices per bus

When hooking up more than one device with a high current draw you may need a powered hub

there should be no difference between hooking up 4 devices to a hub, over 4 devices to separate ports, assuming: they have sufficient power being supplied from the hub, and that all the ports on the computer are on the same bus

100 mA x? figure it out, but you also need to determine
the lengths of the cables. Also Hubs are an other can of worms.
Are they buspowered hubs? many variables

Let's assume that all hubs are self-powered.

How many USB controllers are typically in a given computer/motherboard? My MacBook Pro has two USB ports, does that mean it's got two USB ports running off of one USB controller?

Or do I have two USB controllers?

my power book pro has 7 busses listed in Apple : about this mac : more info

perhaps this isn't the number of busses as it seems a bit high.

If you are using devices with a relatively low data throughput (not multitrack audio) then you should be able to plug them all to one port providing they don't draw too much power, if they do you should use a powered hub

Ok, so from what I've gathered it seems like there are two limitations:
A) Each USB controller can only support 128 Devices
B) There will be no performance penalty as long as the combined data being used by all devices doesnt exceed 480mbps.
C) There is enough power for all.

Now, power can be take care of quite easily by using a powered hub, and I will NEVER reach 128 devices. So the only practical limitation is the max throughput of the USB controller.

Given that I only have a Faderport, iLok, Mouse, and Keyboard attached, I'm thinking that I am probably ok.

Is there any way to check how much Mbps you are using of the USB controller?
