Stylus RMX (should be called Stylus WTF!)

I'm at home trying to compose some music. I got a Digi02 rig w/ Powerbook G4 (1GHz speed / maxed out at 2Gb RAM).

I've recently bought some softsynth stuff (I'm new to this area of the world). I'm trying to load Stylus RMX as an RTAS plug-in and every time it loads, ProTools promptly crashes!

This is with no other plug-ins active at all. I have only opened two tracks: the midi-control track and the stereo audio track.

At work I use Digital Performer 4.5 and jeez, it seems like a MUCH better program than ProTools. I am getting frustrated w/ ProTools these days, but decided not to sell the Digi02, 'cause you never know when you're going to need easy access to Protools software.

Any idea why this might be happening?!?

HELP!

Have you tried trashing the DAE, Digi and ProTools preferences? That followed by a repair of disk permissions and a reboot usually solves any trouble I've seen with new installs on the Spectrasonics stuff...

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try them and report back.

Also, I just learned there's an update to Stylus. The disc Sweetwater sent me is V1.0. There is now a V1.2 on the website. If that doesn't work, I will go ahead and move from Protools 6.4 to Protools 6.7, (for an extra $75 --- it should be free, Digidesign bastards!). This is really upsetting, I was really looking forward to working Stylus RMX.

I hate getting bogged down in software updates. Ugh.

I wish I'd stayed w/ Digital Performer for my home work. Nuendo, Logic, DP are all more elegant programs than PT at this point. DP's so much more fluid-moving than ProTools, even though ProTools has greater market share. It's like a VHS/BETA war all over again. And VHS is winning, I guess...

You can use DP with the Digi hardware, that's what I'm doing (002r). Nice to be able to switch back and forth between PT and DP depending on the project. I use DP for my own composing, but need PT for compatibility with other studios.

updated from 1.0 to 1.2

I will try loading DP onto my powerbook and using the Digi002r hardware. I guess I hadn't really considered this option.

Thanks for the suggestion.

Btw, Stylus just needed to be updated. I had V1.0 and I updated it with V1.2 and it worked fine. But I still prefer DP to PT!

Why do companies always release software before it's mature? Craziness!

The newest DP version is a joke. Stability is almost nonexistant and I can only get stuff done in PT. Stylus RMX works perfectly with it.

you might want to check out BFD....it's crazy what you can do with it....great drums, great grooves, and pretty customizable...

Yeah, thanks for the suggestion. I think I will be getting into BFD next, after I spend some time getting to know Stylus RMX. I imagine that a Stylus/BFD collaboration ought to be pretty cool.

Send a message via AIM to liquidpyramid
If I may ask, what error do you get when Pro Tools crashes? Is is a PT error, or the generic Mac OS X crash dialog?

It was an OSX unexpected crash error message, but it doesn't happen anymore. When I upgraded to 1.2, the problem went away.

It was the old Release-the-software-before-it's-really-ready problem...
