Jump to Pentium 4 ??? Hey guys, I'm finding that my AMD Thunderbird isn't keeping pace with some of the newer software plugs requiring SSE compatibility. Is there a patch available to facilitate this ... or am I looking at having to completely upgrade? If upgrading is my only option, do I stick with AMD or jump over to Pentium 4? Will my IWill motherboard play nice with the P4 or am I looking at having to replace that too? Thanks!

the amd 64bit will give you a higher plugin count than a P4 due to higher math capabilities. you will have to change your mobo if you switch to a p4; also if you go 64 bit amd. g

| If you really wnat to be a cheapskate, an Athlon XP or a sempron should drop into your motherboard and give you a bit of a boost (Check with your MBrd manufacturer first tho). However Gramps is right The athlon 64 ROCKS for audio...if you can swing it it is definately worth it.

either platform will work though the new 64bit amd's will have the edge on plugin couints. both will require new mobos. g

this computer engr thinks amd semprons and particularly amd 64's rock. however be aware of one thing.... ive seen people buy amd 64 - and, due to the price of the processor try and save money on the power supply. be aware there are clone power supplies around that look cheap but might not meet engineering rated power specs. ive seen this happen. in summary - get a nice beefy power supply that will also handle your future needs should you add peripherals to the basic system in the future. another tip - if using a pci slot based sound card dont put anything in the pci slots EXCEPT the sound card. use 8mb cache hard drives. and 512 ram minimum.peace.

Thanks guys! Can I get some additional RAM, Hard Drive speed and other pointers to consider when moving into a newer system these days. I'm on a budget, but would still like to make room for contemporary technology growth. Much appreciated!

AMDs are really cool. You might want to consider an AMD Opteron. You get two CPUs in one and it's still 64 bit, very reasonable price too. If you're running Cubase Check this site for some very helpful benchmarks. http://www.carillondirect.com/clnwe....jsp?country=UK

teacher. re uad1 cards. when i made that comment about pci slots i'm referring to OTHER non audio cards. particularly tv tuner cards, network cards etc etc. also you are an EXPERIENCED user who has obviously done his research/testing carefully before buying like i do. but a lot dont do such carefull testing/research and therefore often encounter problems. for example the uad1 cards work flawlessly in your set up but with a different user and different motherboard and pc configuration, who knows ? which is why you see so many posts about "my audio tracks are s ering on playback etc....". maybe i should have worded it dont put anything else in pci slots unless its related to the core task at hand of audio production. peace.
