Digital Performer a serious audio app?

Well, I've used Cubase and Nuendo primarily for a while now and I'm happy with them for the most part but the 8-channel studio I write in is moving to DP so I'll have to learn it. What I'm wondering is, should I really take the plunge and try to record bands in it? Between AU's and RTAS I dont imagine making the switch from VST would be that difficult but I just never imagined DP as a serious audio app. Its really depressing because I have to learn Pro Tools now too for the studio I'm recording bands in.

Dp is totally fine. I use it and PT le and prefer DP, but only if you have a fast machine! Its a solid app. And your vsts will run fine in it.

Only with a wrapper. DP is MAS and AU format only. How well the wrapper works seems to highly depend on the wrapped plug.

That said, most the folks I know here in LA, me included, use either ProTools or DP (both native or as a front-end for ProTools hardware). DP works great, sounds good, very usable. And the new version (4.5x) is unbelievable.

Great program , and only getting better
works good with my dual 1.4 w/
2 uad-1 cards, 2 gigs of ram.
no sweat, perhaps you might want to get a dual g5 if you plan on running softsynths

Yeah the G5 is definatly a long term goal. My Orchestration teacher was telling me how she sets up DP with EWQLSO for every intrument in a full orchestra. That is a shitload of virtual instruments. Apperently she runs it just fine on the dual 2.0ghz.

of course DP is a serious app... in fact, it feels more "serious" to me because it seems to be marketed towards a more pro/hollywood market.. where something like Logic seems to be marketed towards teenagers and trendy markets...

but.. whatever... marketing is marketing.. Logic and DP are both killer apps.. that do pretty much the same thing....

I'm a pro...or at least I havn't worked a real job in 20 years so I guess that's a definition....I use and have used DP everyday.. I own and use protools in all it's incarnations...(since 1992) but I prefer DP in most cases, especially since 4.0-4.5 on a fast G5...I use it for filmscores to albums..including a couple of grammy nominated ones...I have a complex setup and the front end is a combo of outboard converters and a sony DMX so it's not an in the box situation..... I love the Layout of the program and I think it's the easiest one to learn...it has it's issues but they all do...(I could relate a few protools horror stories ,)but we work through them...I have been impressed with Nuendo but I see nothing there that I can't do in DP..I do however, believe my Digidesign days are numbered.. I have kept up my systems because of compatibility and it was just a better choice until the last year or two...if I'm gonna spend big bucks in the future it will be on a sonoma DSD system or equivalent... but i guess you never know ...
cheers

I use DP and PT LE and you don't need to worry if DP is a serious audio app, because it is! DP is a great program, very deep but also easy to use once you learn it. I've used DP for everything from albums to film scores to live shows. I've taken my computer on sessions and recorded right into DP. It hasn't dissapointed me yet.
