my mac is a lemon!

i have a 1.6 G-5 with 2 gig's of ram.
i have nothing but problems with this mac.
it as had software unexpected quit messages, freeze ups shut down's, and crash's.
it is now on its second hard drive and has crashed it will not get past the second disk when reformatting hard drive and trying to load up the soft ware again.
i got a second set of disk's, but same problem will not get past dick two.
put in a new hard drive friday, same ol, no fix.
the sweetwater team is going to see if they can figure this thing out for me.
so!

has anyone else, had similar issue's?

i have a old mac that has been rock solid, but i think this one i have now, is a lemon.

why not norton?
and why not the apple utility?
i am not sure a utility will fix a new hard drive not loading the os system completely, but i am open to learn.
not real interested in a download i know nothing about, offer some useful info i am willing to listen, and learn.
my question was,

( has anyone else, had similar issue's? )

i will be shutting this thing down in a couple of hrs to get it ready to ship off.
i will check back a few more time before i shut it down.
thanks
pan.

onyx does the same as the apple utility and MUCH more.

i have heared (ok), that norton has MAJOR problems on mac os x.

it could be, that norton has corrupted your system.

at first i would run onyx over it.

and then do some testing.

and if this terrible crashes are occuring again.

format and install a clean system.

and if the crashes are occuring again.

relax and send the machine to repair.

the problem now, since the last crash, is i can not get a complete install.

i have formated the drive it will not instal, i put in a new drive i still can not get a completed install.
when i try to install the operating system i get a message stating the install was not successful.
i have two set's of system install disk's and three drives.
it is going back just wanted to see if any one else had bad luck with their G-5 mac's.

I've seen bad ram cause ALL of your stated problems, especially the fact that you can't install the OS. I'd go back to the original ram setup that came with your machine and see if the problems go away.

Good luck.

all i have is the ram i had installed when i got the machine.
it was one gig.
apple gave me one gig the last time it was in for this to make things right, thats is how i got the 2 gigs.
i will let you guys now what i find out when i get it back.

i see the new G-5 single processor is only a 600 front side buss.

this seems odd.

i got this for a ptle, but i am starting to think pc

I'd try taking out the original 1GB.

Good luck.

For sure Jan is right on that one. Some cheap RAM WILL pass Ram test but fail on installs. I seen that a couple of times.

Re: my mac is a lemon!

Hey Panhead
I've been looking into getting a new Mac and am not yet convinced to turn away from the PC just yet. Did you ever get an actual answer to your question?

In case anyone missed it, the question was is the 1.6 G5 a POS or does he just have a lemon?

I can't tell where the question asked was answered. If the computer is at SweetWater and they're trying to fix the problem how can you try the suggestions given?

Hey BJ,

Nobody missed the question...the answer could be neither. It's probably not a POS, if it were, it'd be posted as such all over the internot by now. To further address the issue, he might not have a lemon, he may just have some bad ram. In addition, based on the showing of posts, it's probably safe to surmise that nobody who frequents this forum "has had similar issues".

If indeed the machine is at sweetwater and he's not local to them, he could have the techs there try some of the suggestions posted here.

Alternatively, he may just have a lemon (or a defective motherboard), but at least we're trying to help. What are you trying to do?

I used to professionally service Macs... Your describing a memory issue. Even Mac could have sent you a bad chip and it would certainly account for all of the issues you're describing.

I don't know that I've ever seen a completely lemon Mac... Bad video cards, drives and RAM, but not the machine itself.

Good luck to you.

Please do not take offense. I would never dog anyone for offering assistance when it was ask for but just for arguements sake, reread his original post and quote for me where he ask for advice. The way I understood his post it was more to see if he should continue trying to diagnose the problems his system is having or was this system prone to problems. Not what would someone else do to try and fix it. And as good as the intentions are, they do not address the question asked. As for what am I doing, I'm a old PC user that has been toying with the idea of going over to Mac and would like to know if the benifits of moving into a Mac would be worth relearning a new system. If I have to learn to keep a machine running and learn a new OS then I might as well stay with the IBMs.

Mine runs fine, not all that great as a DAW, but still a good machine. I'm certain that the "G6" will be better.

I'd agree with this. Sounds like memory.

I also had all kinds of weird problems with my G5. Completely unstable. Freeze and wouldn't reboot. Kernel crashes, etc.

Cut to the chase: Bad factory installed ram from Apple. Generic ram from CompUSA solved all my issues.

norton's might just be your problem... i've had norton's and it screwed everything up. after the 3rd day i got rid of it quick. you might want to look at your ram...i at one point had to replace my logic board twice(although a different computer) simply due to bad ram. and make sure to take it to a tech and have them do a thorough hardware test. this helped me out a lot.
