What does "NON-LINEAR" editing mean?

Hi all,

Would someone please explain what is meant by:

"NON-LINEAR" based editing?

I keep running into the term but it is never explained ...

just what it sounds like...

back in the old days - you had tape.. to edit tape, you had to cut it, and tape it.. linearly. You couldn't just move stuff around randomly wherever you like as you can with a daw, hence 'non-linear'

non linear doesnt mean analog. digital is very often non-linear as well. think of DAT and tape based digital video (hdcam, beta digital, etc)
