Convolution reverb, how good is it?

Well, how do the impulse waves of the Lexicon (or TC Elec 6000) compare to the real thing? I know with software such as Waves IR-1, it gives you a lot more control of the reverb compared to some of the lower cost plug ins. This of course maeks the impules a lot more flexible in your studio.

There are other threads in this forum about this that you might want to search to find your answers.

To sum up my thoughts on them, They can be great, however, none of the current convolution verbs can replicate any modulation, so there are many many artificial reverbs that cannot be sampled, Any Ursa Major, Lexicon, Ensoniq, for example.

I prefer to use them to replicate real spaces rather than artificial reverbs.

Just get a SIR. It's free.

http://www.knufinke.de/sir/index_en.html

There are also many free responses (of real spaces and gear) on the net. So give it a try.

There are good and bad ones.
I have had some stunning results with some of them.

The ones I've seen and heard nothing in common with the real boxes ... nothing. Probably there's good and bad IR's / re creations of 'real' boxes. I have yet to see / hear one. For now I'm far from convinced when it comes down to convolution reverbs.

Today I downloaded the PT TDM TL Space and I have to say I was extremely impressed. I will put it through it's paces for the next week, but so far i'm pleased.

First off, I am a big Red Sox's fan and I live in NY. I was so sick of the Yankess buying the best players and then going against the American League. I was so happy when the Red Sox beat the Yankees.

Anyway, back to the topic. I think you hit on a very good point. Just because you have a impulse of a Lex or anything else, it does not mean that you will have a great sounding reverb. I do believe a lot of the sampling was done quick such as using the balloon method.

When I saw what Waves did to get their own impulses (which you can't get by the way unless you have a Waves IR-1) http://www.acoustics.net/ I know that they did it right, taking samples at 96 and having a very complex way of doing things to get acurate impulses. I am sure most of the freebies on line were not done the same way. You pay for what you get is true.

"After working with the IR-1 and the full set of impulse responses I'm thoroughly impressed with the tonality, richness, and sense of depth and ability to manipulate the parameters, particularly in separating the early reflections from the tail. It's a true breakthrough in reverb technology, providing sound quality that used to cost from 10 to 20 times as much!"
