Cubase Problem(s) I just upgraded to Cubase Studio 4 from using cubase le 1. I'm probably going to feel really stupid after this, but i'm having two problems with 4. First off, when I set my inputs off of my interface (Presonus FP10) it sets each input as a stereo bus, but makes each channel either left or right(input 1 Left, input 2 Right, and so on) does anyone know how to get each input to record in the center, rather than left or right? and also, i recently recorded a band, but their guitarist only recorded one rythem track, so i copied and pasted this track onto another channel, panning each channel to the opposite side. When i play these tracks back however, the two channels sound as if they are both panned to the center. When I solo them, they are panned to each side, but played together sound wrong. Does anyone know how to fix either of these?? Thanks, Fridge

As for yoru first problem of recording input 1&2 as L&R - it's because you are recording to a stereo track .... create a new Mono track and you will be able to select either input 1 or input 2 and pan it independently --- your second issue, if they are absolutley bit identical copies of the same take, make sure they are totally in phase .. zoom in as far as it will let you, and make sure they line up ... otherwise you'll have some very wierd phase issues -- but you're taking a mono source (a single mic from the guitar) and trying to make it a stereo feed by panning ... I would leave it as mono, or use a plug-in to give it a stereo feel if what your looking for is spatial seperation. .. I remember when I jumped from Cubase SX 1 to SX 3 in one leap and was like WHOA! what's going on here!

I already tried to create a mono track. I made one for the input and outputs, armed the track and routed the buses, but when i went to record again, it wouldn't pick up any audio signal. the tracks are as alligned as i can get them, but i'll try the stereo effects. Thanks for the input

| Jesus Freak (I hope that's just a monnicker :P) If you have two identical parts, and pan them hard left and hard right respectively, it will sound as if it is in the middle. This is just how audio works; when you pan a mono channel, the same thing happens; the pan position is basically a marker displaying how much the audio is distributed on the left and right channel. If it is in the middle, there is equal distribution between left and right. You can check this with your recording; turn down the right channel bit by bit as you play it back, and the sound will start to move to the left. If you want to get a wide sound, the best thing you can do is record the same guitar part again (take 2!), and have take 1 on the left and take 2 on the right. The difference in timing and playing will ensure that each one is different enough to create a wide sound. To enhance that even further, you could inverse a few chords or make slight rhythmic changes as well. Sorry if I'm telling you stuff you might already know.

if you press F4 youll bring up the VST inputs/outputs dialogue.. you can set up which buses are stereo or mono here so that they are correct for your interface. as with the guitar, as people have said copying it will be the same take, so its going to sound in the middle. best bet is to do another take.. if you cant do that then you can do as said already, and delay by a small amount and pan, or you can use mono to stereo plugins width enhancing (though id try and avoid these if possible!) also maybe a dash of stereo reverb will spice up your stereo image on the guitar bus
