Weird Apple Computer problem

I'm currently working in a Cubase 4 session when all of a sudden my computer appears to have turned off.

I kind of just sit there like "great" ya know, but then after a few seconds the computer fan turns back on, the screen comes back up, and I haven't lost anything.

Since then it keeps going black and the fan turns off, then it all turns back on and I haven't lost anything.

Does anyone know what is going on?
Thanks for any help!
Drew

sounds like a loose cable... check your connections. the fan thing is weird tho..

if you're running 10.4 tiger try running applejack for the hell of it... its a good general mac maintenance app.

does it do this with any other app? Cubase used to have a "Screen off" or "ears only" function where it would black the screen for more DSP and faster midi timing. maybe that is messing with you.

what, why was my post deleted? I have a mac and pc, and stay out of such nonsense arguments.

Apologize if I have offended anyone, but my mac came tuned to go to sleep after a minute of activity, completely asleep. Sometimes due to network activity it would pop back on.

If nobody has ever seen computers go to sleep, with a short duration, its quite possible that it would appear to a user unfamiliar with powersaving settings that their computer was going on and off randomly.

I will sacrifice whatever animals are required to appease the forum gods, but that was a legitimate post (I thought anyway)...anyway, I'm hoping I didn't upset anyone! It was an honest answer...not sure it's the OP's issue, but power settings are a place to start!

Thanks George.

@Crufty, I think those comments above were deleted because they would otherwise appear out of context, and not necessarily because your particular comment about Mac vs. PC was horrible.

Did you try my suggestion?

This trick has to do with the power supply and things such as the fans (which you mentioned).

I had a similar problem where the computer just turned it self off (didn't come back on tho), that turned out to be a faulty wall socket. Might be worth checking. It sounds like a hardware problem but I would run the usual suspects anyway -repair permisions zapp pram etc.

Cheers

Do you still have your original installer disk? Insert it, reboot, hold down the Option key during start up, then select the Apple Hardware Test. Worth running to find out if your hardware is ok...

hey guys,

i took it to a mac repair place and it was a faulty fan not running, causing another smaller fan in the computer to go into overdrive, which it isn't supposed to do apparently.

i got a new fan in it now and we'll see if the problem is fixed today. i'm on the computer right now typing this so hopefully nothing crazy will happen.

i'll update soon. thanks for all the advice!

I`m almost certain this very same problem was discussed in macnn.com forum.
...can`t remember what turned out to be the reason though.
