Cool Internet Explorer Download Problems

Has anyone got a simple solution for downloading upgrades and files. If I use IE, I have about a 10 percent success rate. What usually happens is the files come up corrupt or something.

I downloaded one of those nerdy ftp programs, but after using the thing for an hour or two I still couldn't figure it out. I don't know what happened, doing these kinda things used to be very straight forward.

I downloaded Mozzilla tonight. I still couldn't download the lastest Cubase SX2 though. I don't know if anyone has had this problem.

If you've been having trouble with all kinds of downloading then it sounds like you have a more serious problem with your computer

It's not all downloads, just Cubase, Retrospect and Abobe Reader.

So what's in common with Cubase, Retrospect and Abobe Reader? Large file size?

If everything was working fine before and you haven't changed anything, it's more than likely a networking issue. If you're running cable through a surge arrestor, try hooking it up directly to your cable modem instead. Barring that, make sure all of your physical connections are good locally, look up your isp's net status, and tracert or pathping the servers you're having problems dl'ing from to get an idea of where the problem is.

I would guess that you're trying to use your browser to download from FTP servers. That rarely works well, especially with busy servers and large file sizes. You want an FTP client, like SmartFTP (free).

Then you simply:
- install it
- run it
- copy the link location of the file you're trying to download onto your clipboard
- click 'ok' when SmartFTP asks if you want to connect to it
- browse to the correct file on the server
- open a 'local browser' in SmartFTP (or just use windows explorer)
- drag&drop the file from the server onto your desired location

Hope this helps.

PS. Yes, I read that you had an FTP client already, but this one might not feel 'geeky' but will do the job

I'm sorry. You are clearly more intelligent than I am. I have owned that program for several years and I've never been able to get close to making it work.

This isn't you problem, so I won't load it on you. But I can't believe there isn't a SIMPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! way of doing this.

The situation is equivalent to having to run around the block everytime you need to flush your toilet.

I'm gonna go back to Smart FTP, but I'm already in the studio 7 days a week. I really don't have time to add more technical challenges to my roster.

you are using a high speed internet connection right?

You know what else....I had a very similar problem...I was hijacked and could not download either.

check your BIOS ...is it updated.?
check your chipset is it updated?

DO a format and a clean install is the next thing I would do regardless. I do a reformat/ clean install at least once a year.

It's good practice too.

my opinion

Got cable modem.

I did as you suggested and updated everything. The only thing that had an update was my CDR.

Just did a clean install of the OS.

I was able to download SX2 which is the only update I'm concerned with. So everything is fine for now.

It's weird. Back in the good o' days, you just clicked on the link and downloaded the file. This has got to be one of the worst aspects of computer progress in existance.

Ian

PS I ran Adaware and found 3 critical parasites before I download SX. So that may have been the problem. Also, I turned off Norton Security during the download and intall.

PPS I'm from Toronto originally. I used to do these northern tours with bands back in the day. Cochrane, Kirkland Lake, Thunder Bay, always a good time.

I think that was it. The train station rings a bell. We were there in summer and I remember how different the light during the day was. It seemed to be brighter than it was further south.

I miss those days. Too many bands to remember and a lot of good times. I don't remember any good war stories from Cochrane, but I have a few from Kirkland Lake. Never played Moosenee, but it seems to me I knew somebody from there.

I'm in LA now. I love this town. Great place for a musician.
