Thread Starter | ISRC codes in Jam 6
ISRC codes are typically 12 characters. Starts with Country of origin and ends with the songs catalog number. There are hyphens in between. When attempting to input the ISRC code in Jam it will not allow the code with the hyphens. Is it correct to load the code in Jamwithout the hyphens? There is also a product number field in the disc settings within Jam. Perhaps the first set of alphanumerics from the code (which remain the same throughout the song list) is the product number and inserted here while the remaining portion of the ISRC codes (which are the songs individual catalog numbers) be inserted in the ISRC field? Whew!

According to ISO 3901, the hyphens are for "presentation" (written form.) Call it punctuation for readability. "An ISRC consists of 12 characters and is alphanumeric, using the arabic numerals 0 through 9 and the letters of the Roman alphabet." No hyphens. The "product number" field is the UPC (bar) code, which is entirely separate in both content and semantics. The ISRC code (per song) identifies a particular recording of a particular song. The UPC code (per disk) identifies the CD as a commercial item for sale. The best part about ISRC is that there are only 46,000-ish "registrant codes" available per country, and they're free (at least here in the US.) I applied and was given two. Obviously the format was designed when all music was registered by large corporations. Get 'em while they're hot. On the contrary, getting a manufacturer code (the first half of the UPC) is relatively expensive, so isn't worth doing unless you plan on delivering many products for sale. Various folks will supply (or sell you cheaply) a single UPC code if you are self-publishing a CD. |
