I looked at the sample video for this - and it was pretty good. I think Logic can do sorta the same thing. You can display transients over the audio track, and have a measure/bar/beat track, then just drag a bar or beat marker to a transient to warp the audio.

The one thing that kinda surprised me, was that your method was to make the entire song at 160 bpm. I thought you were going to keep the natural flow of the music - which is what Logic would allow (although you could put it on the grid, then remove all the tempo changes and it would all be at the same tempo).

The idea was to conform it to 160BPM. I'm not sure what you mean. The drums weren't cut to a click so I was making it all one tempo.

Thanks.

Of course thats one way to do it, but why not have them play to a click then? I was thinking that it would be good to keep the tempo changes but then grid it out, so you can lay loops on top and they will conform to the tempo changes. In that way, the flow of the music is preserved. You never do that?

Of course. I do it all different ways. The point of the video wasn't to show the best way of producing drums. It was to show you the method to make a non-clicked drummer become clicked. It's just a problem solver. I'm all for leaving the drummer not to a click if that's the best thing. These videos just present situations and how to solve them.

Thanks.

Hey Kenny,

Great video - I own all of your videos - and each one has at least taught me one thing that continues to speed me up/add to my arsenal/do something to make me more money and make my clients happy - so thank you.

So....I noticed how you use the catalog feature of the project browser. Mine won't work - it creates a catalog but nothing is in it - none of the aliases are created. I called Digi and the tech was able to reproduce my error (meaning he couldn't create a working catalog either) - he said to upgrade to the latest build and that would fix it - well I upgraded and it still doesn't work - and I'm bummed because it would help me streamline things even more.

Now I'm pretty savy so I have tried creating a catalog from a folder, creating a new empty catalog and dragging files in, etc...nothing works. Any suggestions?

catalog

Is it possible that the catalog feature is HD only? I think I read somewhere it is not supported in the LE version. You can still surf to your personal folder of all your loops though. Jump is your rig HD or LE?

BTW: Kenny, great job.... again.

Scrolling In Pro Tools

Hey folks. Kenny, if you're reading this (or if anyone else knows, please chime in), what is your method for scrolling in Pro Tools when you are zoomed in really close on a region and doing an edit? I am a huge fan and own all 3 of your videos. They are amazing! However, I often see you manually scrolling to the right, using a keystroke I think, while maintaining the same close zoom setting, and I am not sure how you do it. I am sure you mention it in one of the videos, but I can't find it. I would like to know.

By the way, did I mention how much I love your videos? My god, I have learned a treasure trove of information from these things. I have become such a better engineer and editor because of them. My clients are impressed. You can really learn more in a couple of hours with Kenny's videos than you would in months of reading manuals and trying to mouse around on your own. No joke. If you don't already own them, buy them, or buy a 30 day pass to watch them on-line from Groove Box.

Thank you so much!

Happy holidays everyone,

Rappy

scrolling

my cheapie cvs discount 2 wheel GE mouse lets me use scroll wheel #2 to scroll left and right without losing the selection.

Recently a friend showed me the mighty mouse config control. (I was an idiot thinking it was a one button mouse) With the 2 button action engaged and its mini trackball it is really great in protools. Now I need to get one.

The mini trackball lets you scroll in any direction without losing your selection.
How do you guys do this with those giant kingston trackballs?

Hey Kenny, Whats next on the horizon for your videos? Are you waiting for PT8?

Be aware that the mini trackball doesn't last long, it'll need cleaning and that's not an easy shore on the mighty mouse.

I'm using this:

Contour Design, Inc. - Innovative Ergonomic products for your computer.

Although you can use any wheeled mouse by shift rolling.

I actually have a Pen, Rolling Mouse, and the Shuttle thing with Dual Monitors. I'm a bit nutty.

I do have a bunch of videos in the works. Probably 3 more next year.

PT 8 is holding it up a bit. The GUI is just so different.

If I shoot in 7.4 it may be outdated too soon. If I shoot in 8, I may be too far ahead of everyone.

Thanks for your support.

I paid the $29.99 for a month of access to Kenny's videos as well as all the others on groovebox. I gotta say, Kenny is freakin' amazing. I've learned so much from that guy that I feel almost guilty paying so little for all that I've learned. Best $29.99 I've spent in a long time. I look forward to Kenny's PT 8 videos whenever or if ever they'll be.

Thanks Kenny!

At some point, a lot of those other Tips and Tricks will be updated for PT8. But I don't plan on re-releasing the exact same thing in PT8.

On the bench right now is a "Production in PT8 series" showing a production from beginning to end. A "Mixing in PT8" series. And of course, "PT8 Tips and Tricks".

Thanks.

Everything about Kenny's videos is awesome.

I love the quality of the audio and video, the calm and comprehensive way he goes through the issues and, I don't mind saying, I find his voice extremely mellifluous.

Just the best PT videos available. I recommend them wherever I go (which is everywhere).

Good job man, can't wait for the PT8 stuff.

Kenny's tutorials really are great.

I got the month-long unlimited access as well (someone earlier mentioned writing directly to Groovebox about getting a PayPal invoice and this worked great for me as I had some cash just sitting there waiting to be spent on something constructive!) and it's been excellent dipping in and out of all the different tutorials.

I've been using most of these features for ages but it's great to see other work-flow techniques.

I also just read somewhere that there are new PT8 tutorials up as well now but haven't seen them yet.

Take care,

R.

They're up on Groovebox right now, and they're ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!!
(Sorry, shameless plug way too obvious - need tone it down a little!!)

I've done a "What's New In Pro Tools 8" which is available right now but coming soon is a full-on look into all the depth of Pro Tools (8) automation. I'm talking about the really deep stuff in HD that no one seems to talk about.

Coming soon! (Sorry to hijack Kenny's thread)

To anyone who hasn't heard of Kenny's videos. You can learn a bunch from them.
Not only about what the Title says but a lot of workflow too.

Had it NOT been for Kenny's Video I got a year ago I had NEVER gotten around to using Quickeys. Which, might I add, has changed my life and the length of it ;-)

If my grand children at one point say, "Pops, you're 95 years old now, weren't we supposed to inherit when you die??? - From the look of things you're gonna outlive us" - I am going to give them Kenny's number and tell them to blame him for bringing me to use Quickeys and thus extending my life.

Congrats Kenny and thanks for what you contribute to the DAW society
