hard drive keeps disappearing or changing letters

since i got this drive, a 250 gig maxtor, i have had weird problems....

I had to install this Drive overlay something or other, that loads up after BIOS, something like "ontrack" or something...

and it sees the drive, most times..

i have the partitions BFD(U);Recording(R);Giga(G);and Samples (S) ...

then when ill reboot, i see in the screen wheere it autodetects drives , sometimes it will be like:

instead of Maxtor250LE or whatever

it will be MAXTORrgojgo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and then the drive wont initialize in windows

im given an option to initialize it in disk management, but im afraid ill lose my data, in case of maybe some sort of geometry inconsistency or something, maybe im just paranoid..

anyway..

the only way to get it all back is to restart, then it will (usually) be fine.

now, sometimes when i restart, it changes the drive letters back to Recording (E) BFD(G) Samples(H)... all wrong!!!!

then i have to go in disk management again and changes the drive letters..

onething im wondering if somehow, maybe the CMOS battery is bad and it keeps forgetting the drive is there??? THe PC is 3.5 years old..

anyone have any thoughts?

all the data is fine.. for now (i double backup often)
