Using outboard gear within a Daw without latency?

Hey, just hoping somebody could explain how they use some outboard gear across there tracks while, keeping there system latency free. Is this possible with a Daw?

You didn't say what platform you're using, but if its pro tools, I found this tutorial posted by Peeder very useful.

Are you sure you mean 'latency free' and not 'latency compensated'?

I mean, when tracking all you have to do is have your outboard before the A/D conversion. When mixing latency gets less of an issue and then you can insert your outboard in a mix while your DAW software compensates for any induced latency.

Cubase4 is my friend for this.

Cubase 4 is your friend.

You can use an outboard effect send (a nice cubase feature), but you will have a tiny delay depending on your soundcard. For reverbs this is just a tiny pre-delay (not a problem)

But if you take a signal out, and into an outboard effect, and record it... while recording you will hear your latency (with say a rme card, it's almost nothing)... but, if you play it back, it's spot on (daw compensation of latency).

reaper does a really nice job of this...reaper supplies a vst plug called reainsert (i think - i'm not on my daw machine right now) it compensates for latency...works very well for me. sonar offers the same, but i had so much trouble with it i gave up. machine crashes, hangs, etc.

If you want latency free, then you will need a summing amp or mixer, and once you come out of the box, you will need to stay there until your 2-track mixdown.

If you want latency compensation, with external insert and AUX loops, I have had great luck with Cubase 4, which let's you ping your outboard to figure out the i/o latency, then it is automatically compensated for.
