| okay so you've got logic 8 a new mac and $1,500 for plugz What would you buy? I already have Altiverb, so ITB reverb is covered. The rest are stock LP8 plugs. Here's what I've been thinking about to cover a lot of ground. Waves SSL bundle Waves API bundle Melodyne Studio Drum a gog Sonnox Limiter Waves Q-10 EQ PSP-Vintage Warmer With the academic pricing it puts me in the ball park. However I am very curious as to what you would go for. What am I missing? I know there are a lot of cool plugs and have heard great things about the URS and UADs. I am a little leary of UAD on leopard at the moment.

| I am thinking about selling my UADe Card and I've got most plugs. Let me know if you might be interested.

| i wouldn't go with melodyne stdio; rather go for melodyne plugin and get izotope radius for time stretching/compression unless there are specific Studio features you're looking for |

| IMHO, the Melodyne plugin would be great with Logic... seamless operation.

| What feartures would Radius give me that melodyne studio wouldn't? Just curious if I'm missing something. It looks as if integration would be a big plus on Radius, anything else...sound quality maybe? Thanks

| The Waves Platinum bundle is 20% off this month, so it's only like around $1250 at the online stores. Say what you will about the company as a company, but you won't find another such broad and high quality set of plugs for that price anywhere else. For full bore production, you want a fairly broad set of basic tools and it does provide that. Unless you've already got all those work-a-day plugs covered, I'm not sure it makes sense to be spending on SSL and API bundles. You need all that stuff (chorus, linear phase EQ/comp, multi-band compressor, de-esser, flanger, delay, doubler, gates, reverb(s), limiters, meters and spectrum analysis, bass maximizer, EQ and compression - a couple different kinds.) It includes the Ren plugs, which are just dang nice. The SSL stuff is nice, but very limited, since it exactly replicates the console. It only has 2 attack times and is only auto-release. It's not the kidn of compressor I think you'd want for your own compressor. Another option as well is URS Channel Strip Pro, which will give you a very flexible tool that will cover a lot of ground.

| Thanks Peeder, do you know what UAD performance is like with the 8 core on Leopard? Last I heard it was kind of sketchy.

The melodyne is a given, logic pitch corrector is not so hot. (may take others advice and go for the plug as opposed to the studio). I'll look into the URS channel strip. -Dave

| Are you doing this for commercial purposes, or is this for your own personal use? If the latter, why bother with something like Melodyne? If it's your own studio, you can just take the time to get the vocals right and save the money (and the often very obvious sound of auto-pitched vocals, which are kind of cheesy.) I know that real artists can make it sound pretty natural, but the real thing is always better. You could put them bucks elsewhere. I prefer my less than stellar pitch to artifically hyper-pitched stuff, though of course people who listen to my less than stellar pitch might not agree.

I agree 100%, but yes this is a commercial facility. Used only when absolutely necessary. From the samples I've heard, it can add some nice sounding last minute harmonies as well.

| Melodyne Studio is really amazing for so many things. Not just tuning vocals. For example a lot of people have trouble recording or coming up with harmonies. With Melodyne I can just copy the track and make a great harmony and then have the singer learn it. It's also great for writing guitar solos or suggesting new notes for a guitarist to play. It's also great for playing with timing.

| Besides that, Logic's included plug ins are a bit lacking in: Mastering Limiter Reverb EQ Everything else including the compressor are great!

what Rufuss Sewell does with Melodyne Studio i do with Melodyne Plugin and it's perfect for that. this guy came in with a trumpet part and it was far too busy and all over the place. i captured it in the plugin, removed notes and changed things around big time stretching things here and there and developed a totally new part that he then played and then it was done. it's great for sketching ideas btw, melodyne does a thing where it removes the highs (air) off a little which i don't like so i use a combination of logic's pitch corrector/waves tune & melodyne to tune a main vocal for best results. yes, sometimes logic's tool has performed more transparently for a certain edit FWIW you get Melodyne Plugin for free with studio. the other bonus with studio is that you get polyphonic editing capabilities however with the upcoming version of the plugin i think this feature will be included in the plugin - i'm not referring to DNA | |

| 2nd the liquid mix I second the liquid mix. I've used extensively and it's sweet. You never run out of quality options. I found just the right plug for every job in every genre. You can get sweet deals on B stock units at ProAudioStar Home Page. |

| My faves, in order: UAD - fairchild, Plate 140, Neve and Helios EQ's, 1176, Pultec... I use'em EVERY TIME. Waves SSL and API - SSL channel is a great default channel strip when Im saving UAD power... The PSP 'mixpack' (comp, saturator, treble and bass enhancers) - another great option Sonnox Limiter - wunnerful Melodyne plugin - a modern necessity, love it or hate it. Just buy it. |

| Sonalksis? wow no one said Sonalksis essentials? Thats crazy, they're the best. And more importantly, EXTREMELY stable in logic (no random cache noises or latency). IMHO, they are the best essential plugs, everything else is the icing.
