Converting from Pro Tools to Logic

Hey all, i saw logic 8 for the first time at the ascap expo.. and it got me thinking i should try it out.

i was blown away by the ease and simplicity of logic compared to pro tools. i am a die hard pro tools guy, i know almost every shortcut to mix and edit like a breaze. i liked simple comands on pro tools such as, Tab to Transiant, and Grouping, and Color Managment for tracks. just to name a few.

Along with the comands, i love Some (unfortnaly pro tools only) plug ins.
such as vocalign, Strike, beat detective ect.

one thing i am going to miss is the vocalign, and i hear theres nothing like it for logic, which to me is a real bummer and something i dont want to let go.

My QUESTION IS..
is there perhaps a website, or book, video, whatever. that can help a pro tools guy ease right into logic without starting all over learning a new program? i mean i know the basics, record, solo, cut, paste, basic editing that is well rounded on every platform. what would be a good website or refferance i can go to to learn logic fairly quickly?

another question is, if you are ex pro tools, and now logic fan, what do you miss from pro tools that logic dosnt have.. and whats your favorite things logic has that pro tools dosnt? mine so far would have to be the virtual instruments and presets for EQs for starters.

Personally I miss in Logic the "2-Windows-only-concept" from PT, but I must also admit that it got better with Logic 8.
And I miss my Massey-Plug-ins.....
What I like more about Logic is
-Space Designer Reverb
-Folders (Handling a large amount of Trakcs in PT sometimes can get quite annoying)
-Quick Scribe (in Logic8)
-the EXS-Sampler

Logic from PT

I went to Logic from PT as it made sense as a decent quality package for music for Film/tv etc...
I upgraded my interface and Mac at the time so was pleased with those aspects. As far as Logic was concerned it has been fantastic for composing and sounds/programming etc..But i struggled when i first got it.PT is very slick and ready! Also the PT mixer allows you to send anything to anything.PT audio and audio editing is tops too.You can do pretty much anything in Logic too and i guess i still have tons to learn.I ended up getting the book 'LOGIC PRO 7 and LOGIC EXPRESS 7' by Martin Sitter.I found his book to be the best overall reference.I am sure there's an 8 revised copy written too....G.L

5.1 mixing

I just finished mixing a film in PT HD (my first) and I'm pretty disappointed with the performance of PT handling surround tracks. About 6 surround tracks was all we could get going, with VERY minimal effects. Also, having to pay $500 to get a converter to import OMF into PT is nuts! That's what Logic costs by itself!! I'm going to buy Logic and try it out, perhaps with the new "all-in-one-window" in Logic 8 it'll be as useful as PT? Certainly mixing something from Final Cut (which this project was) will be easier. Does anyone know if Altiverb works in surround in Logic?
Thanks

i bought logic to try it out, and cause i was sick of various pro tools stuff... like you I was pretty used to pro tools.

First, it will take a LONG time to get that used to logic. Because you are so ingrained with PT's way of doing things it just is hard to wrap your mind around Logic stuff. At least it has been with me.

I often miss pro tools, and am considering switching back, but the sad part is I know when i get back I'll miss some of the features I got used to in Logic.

I feel like the more you switch daws the worse off you are in the long run, cause you start missing things in your old daw. But I also think it is good to learn as much as you can about each daw, cause knowledge is power.

This probably doesn't help with your decision...but might give you a different take.

I too have been looking for ways of learning logic more in-depth, but what I really want is simply a video of some guy recording, editing, mixing, etc. Just to get an idea of other peoples workflow. I don't need a tutorial, just another perspective.

Not sure if this helps - but for those of you moving to Logic from PT, the PT shortcuts (as used on the dedicated PT keyboard) can be emulated in Logic key commands. In fact there is a pre-done template you can use so that every key combination you would use in PT does the same thing in Logic. That should make the learning curve much quicker.......

I tried this but I figured if I wanted to learn Logic then I should learn Logic's way of doing things, kc's and all. Plus kc's are so integral that after a while it doesn't even matter if you're using PT's or not. I did hang on to command spacebar for record, purely out of nostalgia.
