I have Melodyne, I think its an amazing tool.
Once you get your head around the program, its really easy to tweak things. I think it sounds excellent actually un-noticible in quality. Great program and worth the money.

ive been using it for vocal tuning , and for me its the strongest
tool for that i can find. ridiculously easy in a way too , especially if you
are sick of antares , which i love to slap on a ancillary bv in auto mode , but to really tweak a lead vocal , i can acheive results not possible in autotune.
this is much faster for me to tune a vocal also then it is in autotune.
mine seems to be a bit buggy tho. i find that i need to nudge the audio a bar or so to have it sync with pro tools. once i do that , its cool. but that is dissapointing. anyway , amazing tool .

Has anyone ever used it on anything other than vocals?

Why don't you go on their site and watch the 10 minutes video showing things you can do with the program? Worth watching imo.

I'm a fan, but like most of these things (autotune, vocalign etc) I think it can be overused

it still sucks ... have done extended testing with several versions ... great potential but that's about it ... it messes with the original sound and degrades it beyong acceptable levels ... imvho of course.

Also ... thing that realy realy bugged me last time I tried is that you still couldn't EXACTLY positions your file ... major hassle.

the simple fact that you cannot import a file into it .... do NO processing whatsoever and export it back without changing the length and the sound of the original puts it on the shelf for now for me .... just not for professional use.

of course your milage may very well vary.

thats what i was looking for. my side is all pro and i was hoping that for a grand it would be great. still will check it out at west la music. i just cant stand using auto tune. the melodyne site makes it look easy and like there are no problems. chris have you used 2.5 yet?

nope , haven't tried 2.5 (last one was 2.1) but I read the release notes for 2.5. Doesn't mention any improvements for the sound nore accurate positioning.

It does mention that the export is now up to 5 times faster .... grudge ... wish they'd make it 5 times slower and do it right....

When I first bought it I did numerous phone calls to their support desk. Explained it over and over to them.

Actually funny thing, I guess I was kinda complaining on the phone to them that one could very clearly hear the change in sound on the breath of a voice ... sounded like a robot with heavy asthma after melodyne processing. THe guy actually replied by saying that maybe I could cut the breaths out.

anyhow ... whatever ... the pure fact that these people will even bluntly say there is no problem when talking to them on stands at music fairs made me decide to keep dfegad on it till they either get it right or at least aknoledge the fact that it's a toy.

I'm on the other side of the fence. I think it is an amazing creative tool and doesn't do any more damage to the sound than the other pitch programs. Add to that how much more musical a tool it is, and I think it is a home run. You can simply do more things better, faster, and more imaginatively than with any other pitch/time program on the market.

I think it's amazing. Not only for tuning and harmonizing but also for showing your singers what to sing. I had one song were the singer just wasn't getting the harmonies that I wanted. So, I told her tp take 5 and I loaded the main vocal riff into melodyne. I then copied it 4 times and made the harmonies I wanted to her to sing. I exported each one out and then had her sing along with herself using the harmonies I had created. It was amazing. She nailed all of them very quickly.

Another thing you can do is crontol the pitch via midi. If you move every vocal note to a constant pitch than you can basically make the singer sing whatever you want.

Here is an example:

Universal Blackness

at the end of the song, I took my sister's voice and zero'd out the pitch. I then did 4 passes playing melodies on the keyboard that controlled the pitch of her voice. The results were amazing. granted, there are a few spots were you might think it sounds a little wierd. But just that you can do it is pretty mindblowing

It's good but could be even better.

The idea is great but it's a bit buggy and it messes with the sound, especially breathing sounds which sound like you have metal lungs.

If you use it carefully it can be quite transparent though and I've tuned many vocal tracks with it. Plus you have all the fun features previously mentioned.
