Laptop suggestions

Hi I'm new to this forum and am seeking some advice on laptops.

I,m looking to create a portable rig for recording live bands (mine included).

Have this one in mind..

HP Pavilion dv9700t laptop/notebook
Core 2 Duo T9300 2.50GHz Vista ULTIMATE

Availability: Usually ships in
1-3 business days

New.
  • Intel® Core™ 2 Duo Extreme T9300-2.50GHz Processor with 6MB L2 Cache and 800MHz FSB
  • RAM: See Options & Accessories Below.
  • 240.0GB 7200RPM SATA HDD Space
    (2x 120.0GB 7200RPM HDD)
  • Integrated LightScribe DVD±RW (Dual Layer)
(Copies/Burns both DVDs & CDs, and Plays both DVDs & CDs)
  • Graphics: 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS
  • Multimedia Features: HP Imprint Finish & HP Pavilion WebCam w/ Integrated Microphone; HP Mobile Remote Control
A couple of questions..

I've pretty much decided what firewire device I will be using - M-audio profire 2626.

Does anyone know what kind of track count I can expect to get on a laptop with the above specs???

I'm hoping to be able to capture 14- 16 tracks reliably.

Any other suggestions appreciated

cheers

Hi Scott,
thanks for the reply. Got any suggestions on what I should be using?? money not really a problem as long as I get a portable rig that will at least capture 16 tracks reliably. Plan to mix on my existing desktop setup..
what are my choices??

Macbook pro could be an option - overpriced/overrated in my humble opinion-would just install windows anyhow. used/owned them back in the day when they were way better than PC's - can't say that now. They are just overpriced PC's. But if they get the job done??

There seems to be a real hassle finding notebooks that have TI firewire chipsets. Why does this shit never get any easier. Every 3 or 4 years I jump on these forums(been a cubase user since 1995) and try work out what to fork out my my hard earned cash on. I geuss no pain no gain.

I'm in Australia - so my OS buying is limited due to warranty etc etc. Would just like to find a good known brand PC laptop does does what I require.
any other ideas appreciated

i like the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads

Very reliable, good support...

I use my Thinkpad R60 with Ableton live and a RME Fireface 400 in live-situations and never had any problems

Overpriced? Compare a similar Alienware or any boutique notebook and you will see that they are comparable in price.

Also, Apple service is excellent. They just did warranty work for no charge when my Mac was 2 weeks past the warranty. Plus, I had voided the warranty by installing a larger HD. What more could you want?

The HP laptop I listed in the first post retails for about $2500.00 here in Australia.

the equivalent spec'd macbook 17" 2.5 Ghz retails for $3799.00 here is Australia.

To me that seems overpriced!!

Just an update. Thanks for all the suggestions and help with this one. Believe it or not I am now the proud owner of a macbook pro 2.5ghz machine.

I ended up getting this on aussie ebay for $2800.00 inc freight. Excellent price for a new macbook??

Now I'm half thinking about seeing what I can do within the OSX realm?? All my software licences are now PC, so i will definitely be installing windows xp pro. But its kinda tempting with all the cool things which are included - garage band sounds kinda cool-like a cut-down acidpro. I hear it even allows multitracking-8 track limitation though..

Very tempted to get Logic express to play around with. I was a logic user user on Pc from version 4 - 5.xx when it became mac only. Keen to see whats happened with Logic in the past few years??

Geuss I'll start trolling the Mac forums e

If money aint a problem then go Macbook pro , more powerful machine and better OS....

PS sorry i didnt realise you've already bought one....

I was the same i had a PC and swapped to MAC , i decided not to install xp and just go with Leopard .... what a good decision.
