Been using a lot of live, but on commercials and things I use Strike....it has great sounds, great grooves, and great mixing options. Very cool..........

For a realistic sound, nothing I have heard touches Mixosaurus. Nothing.

Ocean Way Drums by far, over everything, though I do use other bits and pieces from time to time, most notably Steven Slate Drums.

Another vote for Ocean Way Drums for the sake of sonic quality.

If you're hardcore on velocity level, I think nothing can touch Joe Barresi Evil Drums (BFD Expansion) at the moment - 250 velocity levels (maybe the Mixosaurus, but I don't know what's the exact amount of velocity levels), and the sound quality is one of the best within the BFD family along with the Andy John expansion.

Addictive Drums is an awesome product- cheap, easy to use, flexible, great sounds, drag n drop files onto the arrange page and off you go, or dig deeper and edit the grooves. Chose this after a ton of online research and have not been disappointed

I must say, though having seen the demo online of the new Toontrack Superior 2.0 - that looks and sounds absolutely amazing as far as realistic sound/performances. Another thing to save up for.

BFD primarily here.

I've been using it strictly as a drum module (although some of the grooves are pretty okay, I guess, maybe I ought to play with that again some time).

I've owned a bunch of drum machines from the very first Dr Rhythm (DR-55) to the Oberheim DX (digital samples but not MIDI!) to the SR16, to the DM5, as well as a whole bunch of Soundfonts and other sample sets. (Recently I even used the somewhat layer-limited Session Drummer that's part of Sonar, since my version of BFD [1.5] somehow neglected to include any friggin' brushes. At first blush, it sounded pretty good -- then I realized that varying the velocity tended to simply vary the volume of hits [unless they crossed over into another dynamic layer, anyhow] and I realized why I do like the heavily multi-layered BFD.)

No matter how good they get... after you've lived with one for a while, you start knowing where the seams are.

Before the expansion packs came out for BFD, I would often hear tracks I was pretty sure were tracked with BFD (that original room sound had a real signature, unfortunately).

250 velocity levels? That surely can't be right...

I also am using Mixosaurus. They sound amazing. I've heard others speak of Ocean Way, haven't heard them but Mixosaurus are incredible. The hats and cymbals are so realistic, its really hard, if not impossible to tell they are real drums played by a real drummer. Plus, tons of flexibility with room tracks, PZM tracks and routing into your DAW. I went for the internal HD, saved some $. Great option if you don't need an external HD.

Yes it is... more than a single hit for a MIDI velocity value gives you much more realism.. than some libraries which only have 12 to 16 velocities total.

You can hear demos:

i bought BFD 1.5 about 2 months back now (i couldnt afford BFD 2) and im very happy with it so far the hi hat samples are the only thing that let it down in my opinion (though they are still good). i use it for a rock/metal type use.

Thanks for the help guys.

Are you just using a midi keyboard to "play the drums in"?

Is it fair to say with a bit of skill with one of these programs that buy using a midi keyboard i can get some pretty good sounding drum beats?

Our demos were created with a MIDI keyboard and mouse.

EZ Drummer and Strike, replacing sounds with Steven Slate samples.
Anxiously awaiting Superior 2.0.

Even with a mouse just editing the velocity of the hits you will get great results - bit more time-consuming as the sounds are not conveniently mapped out on a keyboard

I really need to get myself some space to put a keyboard

As for the "skill" - the good thing about Addictive and EZdrummer is that there are loads of patterns ready to go, and its a simple task to adapt the fills etc to your liking (my experience with Addictive)

I sat there for couple of hours scratching my head, cos it was a new way of working (new to both PTLE and MIDI) Asked a coupla questions on the DUC forum and off we go... "Ain't no stoppin' ussss"

I've been using Addicitve Drums until recently for Rock/Metal-Drums.

Now I started with Ableton Session Drums. Great sounding, lots of possibilities of tweaking the sound for your needs, unfortunately only available in Ableton Live.
When I need Logic I slave Live via ReWire into Logic.

Toontrack, easy to use, and even if it doesn't have THE best samples, i find more important a fluid workflow, improving the drum sound mixing it's just fun.

We've had BFD for several years. (In fact, I just ordered BFD 2 last night. Looking forward to its arrival.) We've had good luck it in both Logic and PT|HD. We've also got two of the expansion packs (XFL and Deluxe).

My sense (as with so much we talk about on this forum) is that each of these applications (BFD, Mixosaurus, DFH Superior, etc.) is quite good and can get you the results you want if you master it. As usual, it comes down to your work flow.

really awesome especially cuz of the "intelligent" drummers...nothing can touch it in that regards

and they let you add samples from other drum vsti's such as ezdrummer which i hear is superior...but i'm pretty bad with sound distinguishing...
anyway its on special atm, but yea, ezdrummer also gets rave reveiws from others but if u want some thing to hear what yr playing and then "react" to it and jam then...jamstix.

Speaking as someone who tried everything on the market, Addictive Drums wins. Not much in terms of available drum sounds yet, but I have found that I can get anything from it with a little editing in the sample editor, and they sound clean and uncoloured. The GUI is straightforward and user-friendly. Proper e-drumming support is not there yet, but I have formulated workarounds for all its shortcomings in those terms, so it's not an issue for me. YMMV. The sounds, though, win the ticket. Just brilliant, especially when one event arrives in the decay envelope of a preceding event, where every other drum plug fell flat on its face in my tests. The sample layering takes complete care of it, and it's only possible to get machine-gunning if you tell it that that's what you want it to do, by selecting the one-shot feature, which uses the same sample every time. Nothing else has come remotely close, to the point that, until AD, I used sounds from MIDI tone generators, layered for the desired sound. Now I just load up a preset and go.

Drumkit From Hell Superior - Custom and Vintage (played by chrisso who is around here on the forum!) is my favorite. I trigger it from a Roland vdrums kit. Easy to use, integrates with the vdrums seamlessly and sounds damn good.

Natualy I prefer playing my real acoustic kit but when I can't the above solution makes me pretty happy.

Well I'm no longer using real drums (I had a real kit but sold it because my drum room sucked and the sounds were awful). So I'm all about the drum sample software.

Without a doubt I'd go with Steven Slate Drums plus Kontakt. By faaar the best sounding drums and you get so many of them that you can never run out of sounds. Plus the Z4 room sound is like a magic 3D monster. These are the drums that are on so many major albums and there is a reason for it. The only thing is you need Kontakt and it took me a bit to get comfortable using Kontakt but now its a breeze. I also use them with Drumagog on real drums because most drum tracks I mix suck big time.

I just got Addictive Drums too last week and I love the interface so much and its really easy to get going and the effects are cool. The drum sounds are good but don't really cut it for me but I don't claim to be a wiz when it comes to processing drum sounds because the sounds are quite raw. I'd be curious to hear what steven slate could do if he had to process the Addictive drum sounds. There was a thread on the Addictive drums forum archives about making Addictive Drums sound more like the Slate drums and they said it wasn't gonna happen. I kinda wish you could use the slate stuff in the Addictive interface because it really is nice and easy.

I also heard OceanWay at Guitar Center in Hollywood and I thought it was super cool. You can do a lot of adjustments per drum sample, like choose the mic per drum and the combo of mics per drum. The sounds were pretty cool but I couldn't get a great idea because I wasn't familiar with the system and there was no sub to get the real idea of the kick drums.

+1 for Jamstix!

Been using the original version, but have v2 as well. I just haven't gotten the hang of it yet. It took me long enough to learn the original!
