I have a new MacPro quad 2.8GHz which came with one of these new Optiarc Sony/Nec DVD/CD-R drives. Unfortunately it is incompatible with my gold Tayo Yuden CD-Rs that I use for the cd premaster. And the slowest burning speed for CD-Rs is 8x which is a little fast for my taste. So I went out and bough a Plextor PX-800A, just to find out it has the same problems and will also burn CD-Rs no slower than 8x! Bummer! Has anybody else experiences in burning premaster CDs with a new 2008 MacPro? Also, I can't find a place to purchase Plextools Pro XL, has anybody got an idea where I can get it? Toby |

Lately I have never burned CD's uner 12-16x. I always get my lowest error rates at the faster speeds. Regards, Bruce |

Wow, is this so? That surprises me. So you haven't had any plants complaining about too high bler or other errors? The thing that keeps bugging me most, though, is the lack of support for the Taiyo Yuden Gold CD-Rs... Thanks for chiming in, Toby |

I have a Plextor 760 in the second bay of an 8 core MacPro. I have the standard Optiarc in the first bay. Using Plextools to check errors i see very little differences from either drive at any speed between 4X and 24X. I use regular, inkjet printable Taiyo Yudens and get between 0.4 per second C1 errors at 4X and 0.8 per second at 24X. The Plextor generally does have a bit smaller error rate than the optiarc. But either one seems to be more than acceptable and well within tolerance. The version of Plextools I use is the free LE version. It does all I need; checks for C1, 2 and CU errors as well as jitter and standard read/write tests of both blank and recorded media. Is it no longer available as a download from the Plextor website? That's where I got it from. |
