which windows OS?

hey guys, i'm having an operating system dilema. I'm getting a new pc and i can't decide on an OS.

here's the short parts list:
quad q9300
4gigs ddr2
asus p5nd
nvidia 8600gt

i'm wondering should i go for XP64, Vista 64(or 32)? Or should i just say **** it and stick with regular old XP 32 until vista 64 bit is stable and good. I've been hearing lots of bad things about XP64, and i've also heard alot of bad things about vista. I need help.

It depends on what software you're using. Some is only compatible with 32-bit XP/Vista. Others isn't Vista compatible at all. 32-bit XP Pro is probably the safest, most stable bet at this point. You can always get another hard drive and dual boot later.

+1 for 32-bit XP Pro! Vista is a totally kluged, memory hog of an OS(it is for the technology ingnorant among us, kinda like training wheels for them!). Look into Ultimate at some point maybe further down the road, but for now XP Pro is the rock-solid, most optimized way to go. I can have a full mix of 24 tracks going on it with full plugin effects and convolution eqs on every track on a Core 2 Duo machine, and only use a half a gig of RAM!

Mixing these 2 roles can spell DOOM...(pun intended).

if your going to be doing some major mixing in your comp i would mix music an games....id get a seperate computer for that get rid of any unnessecy programs other than music and use those for your music computer....and i will say that XP32 is the safest bet and the best platform for music IMO

I don't know any good reasons not to avoid Vista like the plague if you're going to be doing anything serious on your computer (besides, maybe, developing software for Vista -- something I hope never to have to bother with.)
