Pro Tools le Macbook, hard drive Q?

Hi im just converting from cubase 4 to PTLE. I was fine recording to my internal HD with Cubase. I notice PT recommends using an external FireWire Drive. Since I have a macbook i only have one Firewire port to use for the interface(MBOX2Pro). Anybody recording to their internal drive? Would it be safe to connect a firewire drive to the extra port on my interface? I have a mybook 5000GB USB Drive, would it be better to try and record to that? Thanks in advance.

It kinda depends on how much tracks you want to record simultaneously and at what sample rate and bitrate. If you want to like record four tracks at the same time at 48/24, you should be fine just using the internal disc. I wouldn't use USB drivers to record to. I guess it should be fine, but it's doesn't seem right

If you just use four tracks @ 48/24 you should be fine recording to your internal drive. I would use the USB drive just for backups or stuff like that.

i do location recording often up to 14 tracks at 44.1 24bit on a old G4 i-book to it's internal drive (logic 7) and it works ok - i think people assume the slower speed is more of a big deal than it actually is. You should be fine on a intel macbook.

Perhaps they have made deals with all external HD manufacturers

I think there's a noticeable difference when the sessions get bigger and VI:s and stuff like that show up. But it doesn't seem like that's what you'll be doing

I've definately noticed more DAW errors when recording to the system drive, but it can be done. Does your M-Box have two firewire ports on it? If so, you can daisy chain your firewire devices. Plug the 1394 harddrive into the mbox and the mbox into your computer. This is how I used to operate my old 002r before I got the HD rig.

Save your sessions on your hard drive, then when the session is done, unplug the MBox, plug in the external hard drive to the firewire and save it to your external hard drive.

Your computer will currupt. This isn't a warning, this is a fact. If your computer shut down today, would have at least 2 backups of everything worth value? You should.
