Mbox Micro

Is there a way to rout the audio so that it comes out of the built-in speakers?

1. Disconnect input cabling of internal speakers from computer.
2. Wire a 1/8th in male jack onto inputs to internal speakers.
3. Connect 1/8th in jack to output of Micro.

To be serious though, there is no way to do that by using the software.

How do you like the micro? I dig mine.

couldn't you plug an 1/8th inch from micro to line in on laptop and have a program in the background in record mode to route the audio?... never tried this but....

Core Audio would not allow that while Pro Tools is launched.

what about a program like audiohijack? I haven't tried this but I have used it to record streams in the past, but I don't know how it works with digi's coreaudio.

I believe this would not work as well. It is not a question of recording the output, but merely monitoring back on the internal speakers. I do not think audio hijack will even playback out a different source while PT is open.

I do this all the time with the micro. There is a little program called "line in" by Rogue Amoeba that will run at the same time as PT (using core-audio on the laptop). PT will take control of the Micro, and "line-in" will run off the internal audio drivers. you than run a simple 1/8" jack from the micro back around to the input on the laptop. This program will feed the audio live to the speakers (and uses very very little resources).

best of luck.

I'm back from Radio Shack with a 1/8-1/8 to try that.

PT LE does not use Core Audio, so it might work. The PT hardware only makes use of a Digi Core Audio driver when PT is not running...

Sorry, I was meaning in terms of PT won't allow Core Audio to operate fully while PT is open....

Try it though... i guess you never know.

That worked. It's a shame that Digi doesn't make a drop-in chip that can be installed inside the laptop so that I don't have to have these cables hanging everywhere.

But it sure is nice to not have to have an Mbox for simple editing.

Cool trick.

Now seeing that I also run PT on a Win XP partition on my MacBook, do you (or anyone else for that matter) know of something similar on the Windows side?

Would be super to be able to do it on both.

Yeah, the cable thing is a bit of a bummer...but oh well. Glad that it's working for you. The micro's been great for simple take home things. Sure wish they'd support surround tracks/paths on LE someday, bit of a bummer when bringing sessions home.

As for the PC side of things, hmmm, I'm not really in that world anymore but it stands to reason that there's got to be something on the PC side (like line-in). Perhaps someone will chime in.

best of luck

Not true - coreaudio won't allow you to use the digi hardware as a coreaudio device, but it will let you play sound through the built in audio.

I have Coreaudio set so that the digi hardware is first choice - but if I open itunes whilst Pt is open, iTunes plays back through the mac hardware.

Sucks you have to do another set of A/D/A to monitor back... wish you could do it in the software.

well, it's just another variant of "why won't digi let us use coreaudio instead of their own hardware".

To be quite honest, for editing it's probably fine. No-one's going to mix on a Macbook's speakers, so another ADA conversion doesn't really matter. M-Box Micro is what it is, limited features and all.
