So what about the Asus EEE PC ?

Hi,

is anyone actually using the EEEPC for making music, recording, softsynths, Ableton, whatever ? Or at least planning to do so ?

I would really be interested in any reviews, comments etc in that regard.I haven't bought one yet but am planning to buy either the current 4G (701) model or the forthcoming 900 version which will have a 8.9 screen, more RAM and flash storage and whatnot.

Would be most interesting to hear from people who use or plan to use the eee for making music.

Given the figure of 350000 sold units i'm pretty surprised to not find more discussions here or elsewhere about the eee as a lowcost DAW machine.

Anyone ?

I'd like to see the specs on the hardrive but I'm sure you could record on that.
Any modern computer is good enough to make records with.

Well you can see the specs on site i linked to; the HD is actually a 4 to 8 GB SSD (up to 20 GB in the 900 model), expandable with a SDHC card ( up to 32 GB additional storage).Of course as the EEE has 3 USB 2.0 ports, one could always add USB drives in addition to the internal flash drive(s).

bought a 4GB version to use for email and webstuff on the go. small size is great.

looked at the specs and the processor is a 900 mhz celeron, 512 mb ram.

by far a more powerful computer than the 300 mhz cpu i ran cubase on back in the mid to late 90's. I'm guessing here but it seems like it would run a wide range of audio programs with the exception of the newer generation versions requiring faster processing.

unless you are good with linux though, i would suggest installing windows xp. Just to investigate i tried installing audacity and found out that linux is a confusing process. I'm a windows guy and was totally lost although some googling eventually got me to a few helpful sites.

for under $600.00 i got the pc and a 500GB usb 2.0 external hard drive. They weren't bought to serve as an audio system but for that cost it may well be worth investigating further...

oh, and the eee pc is dead quiet. the only moving part is a small quiet fan to cool when it gets hot and it sounds like a mosquito on the far side of the room.

Would be great to know the results in case you should investigate further in regards of using the EEE as a DAW machine.
Btw - you know you can up the RAM to 2GB, do you ?

as soon as i can get xp installed i'll borrow a friend's USB device and give it a whirl.

2 GB of RAM you say? hmm... if this works i may have to uprgrade in that direction.

too bad there isn't a firewire port on these as well. renders my liquid mix a little useless. doesn't really matter though as i have a tower in the studio for the real mixing stuff.

also, i saw a video on modding an eee pc to have a touch sensitive screen. Apparently only costs around $60.00 and is a quick install. I'm wondering if I could control my virtual mixer and plugins with my hands...
