Thread Starter | Can Pro Tools LE and HD can only use a maximum of 4gb of Ram?????
I called apple the other day and spoke to one of there reps about building a Mac Pro and what their advice was on ram. So they told me that Logic can take advantage of 8 cores and all the ram that has been installed, however Pro Tools can only use 4gb of Ram!!! Anyone else heard this before? I know that apple has to biassed in some way they want me to use Logic, which I do and Love, but I also use Pro Tools the question is. I have a Pro Tools HD2 system but I run waves native plugins, will Pro Tools take full advantage of the 8gb of ram? Is it worth buying 8gb of ram, 16gb? Thanks |

both make use of 8 cores, though in my experience logic doesn't make a very good use of them... the ram usage is a sticky subject. As far as I know pro tools is still a 32 bit application and will only use a maximum of 3-4 gigs of ram. However it is always good to get extra because keep in mind that the os needs some, and any other programs you might be running along side of pro tools will need some. So 8 gigs is still not out of the question. Logic's use of ram I've heard every side of the story, that the program itself only uses 3-4 but the plugs like exs24 will use more, that it uses the limit of a 64 bit app, etc. etc. I don't know for sure, I just know that it has never been a bad idea to get more ram, especially if you are working with a lot of samples. Another good option to go alone with the ram is a very fast hard drive, it is one of the main bottlenecks in the latest computer setups these days. |

yes, logic's EXS24 new feature is the ability to use mre than 3gb of ram. but the rest is the same. both apps are the same in that matter. as for the multi core im not sure but i beleive is a program is written for multi cores or multi threading then it will take advantage of all of them. but im not sure. copmuter sicence should know if thats true. |
