Need Help! Anybody good with Windows XP and/or Vista

Ok here's the situation. Had a problem with my OS back in Nov - it wouldn't boot.

With the recovery discs they sent me, I was provided the option of backing up my files to an external before the OS was repaird. I did this.

Fast foward...To make a long story short, due to some mod failures, I ended up having to recover yet again. This time (I wasn't the one doing it) somehow the files didn't get backed up. I figured I'd go get my external and recover the files I had stored there only to find a file called Backup.001 (Recovery Wizard Application) and 12 other files that were .fbw.

When I click the first file it takes me to the recovery wizard. The wizard asks me to "insert the last disc". And as usual give you the option to go "back", "foward" or "cancel". However, only the cancel button was usable. No matter what I did, the "next" and "back" functions remained grey. I had no clue as to what disc it was asking for so I copied the files from the backup drive onto a series of DVD's (13 discs in all). I tried starting the process over again from the DVD's and got the same results.

Can anyone tell me how to get my files back? What the hell is an .fbw file?

?????

Yea didn't really have a choice. The machine was an emergency purchase. I needed something quick (my previous machine had died of natural causes) and it was the only thing I could afford.

Aside from having Vista on it, it's actually a damn good machine...

Thanks for the link but it only got me halfway through the problem. Now that the wizard is working it's telling me I have "no files to restore".

I can't possibly have 44gigs worth of nothing...

Do you have a 2nd partition for the audio on your drive? If so, format the OS drive and get a copy of XP or reinstall Vista with a Format.

Trying to install XP is what got me into this mess. My machine's hardware simply won't work with XP. The drivers don't exist (one of Microsoft's clever ways to prevent downgrading).

I reinstalled Vista and THOUGHT that my external drive would handle the backup thing. I've called my computer's tech support and that guy's idea didn't work (copy the backup files to a different location).

I've got one more thing to try, though, and if it doesn't work I'll post what happened...

Never heard of that before. Iv'e installed XP and a few recent prebuilts and managed to get drivers for everything. If the machine is Intel based go to Intels site for chipset downloads and the other manufacturers for other cards etc.

This sounds like a hellish situation.

A couple of things: The program "Get Data Back"has worked wonders in the past. Shortly after a session a few years ago, I was in the process of backing up an external drive and the FW cable got yanked and corrupted the whole drive (all of the original recordings). Anyway I was able to recover everything no problem. On another event I found that I could recover data from an HD that had been formatted twice!

It's not free, but it's worth a shot.

Also you should be able to install XP on a machine that is running vista. What errors is it giving you on installation?
