In my experience Clocking is critical.
My understanding is that it is only relevant to A/D and D/A conversion but maybe it helps when mixing in the box.
The point is you are always going to have conversion even if it's just for monitoring.
So the quality of your clock will affect the quality of your mix.
If you mix using multi outs of your DAW (ie 16 or 24 ch outs thru a console) then clocking is critical.
But even if you mix ITB (in the box) then the way you hear your sounds will effect the way you mix.
Bad clocking intoduces high amounts of jitter - this seems to come out as harshness and mushy low-end.
My advice - buy the best clock you can afford.
There is a good low-cost one made in the US which I use and love.

SSL Mix Box Analog Summing - $50 per song - convert your ITB 'digital' Mix to an SSL summed 'analog' mix.
Provide me with multiple stereo stems and I will send you back a final 'summed' mix.
The difference is amazing.

I'm no expert - but I would say mix down in real time using the clock.
I find the mix sounds better in real time instead of high speed bounce.

I have to 1,000,000 agree. The way I see it, if you are mixing digital you need to use the best clock available to you.
