Logic with Apogee or Lynx?

Hello, all.

I realize there are a lot of threads that talk about both Apogee & Lynx products. I spent the better part of lst night reading a lot of them. But I would like to get some opinions and input on something, when using with Logic Studio:

Symphony w/Rosetta 800 or Lynx AES16e w/Aurora 16

This isn't a question of which is better (I realize they both have their great points); rather it is a question of the differences between the (2) systems (when running Logic Studio).

I know that the Symphony is supposed to work very well with Logic - but it costs a lot of money (which is a factor). I also read a lot of "thumbs-up" replies about the Aurora 16. I need to know which is better suited for Logic, or if the differences are noticeable enough to spend the extra cash and get an Apogee Symphony system.

Thanks a lot for your input.

Take care.

i think that the aurora 16 is still not ready for primetime with logic studio,
if you are using a newer macpro,
as they have yet to release a PCIe card.
you could of course use one via firewire
(they have a firewire card)

im sure the mix software that linx uses would probably be fine
in conjunction with logic, albeit somewhat different than maestro.
as far as speed and efficiency, Symphony is designed to work with logic
from the ground up but, who knows what linxs PCIe card will bring to the table
when its released.

i am very eager to find out myself
hope this helps

Glad to hear that.

I am of the impression that the Symphony and Logic go hand in hand .... and have very few (if any) issues.

Thanks a lot for your input.

Take care.

Really? I just ordered one from Vintage King. It's been up for at least a week:Lynx Studio Technology AES16e PCI Express 192 kHz AES/EBU Interface | VintageKing.com

I'd originally planned on the Apogee AD-16X / symphony combo because of its renowned compatibility with mac DAWs, and because it seemed like the only option. But wowee, the price!

I'll let you guys know how it goes as soon as I get it hooked up to the Mac and my incoming Aurora 16.

I've seen a few others online offering pre-sales of the product, but this is the first I've seen of it actually on the street. This is good news indeed (I'm looking at picking one up in Boston in about 3 weeks )

Loving my Logic & Lynx

I've been using Logic with the Aurora16 & AES-16 PCI card for a while now and it's been a truly pleasurable experience.

I've been waiting on AES-16e availability before I change my dual 2.0 PowerMac to a Mac Pro (and do the cross-grade on my UAD-1 cards!). The AES-16e will also allow me to run an additional Aurora WITHOUT the need for an extra PCIe card. There is a kit coming out for the AES-16e that will make this possible. I don't want to lose a UAD-1 card and need to run more direct outs from Logic into my analog console, which leaves the factory on Friday... Oops, I think I've wet my trousers!

I'm using a Symphony with a couple of AD/DA16Xs and Logic. It's rock solid and sounds wonderful!

@ tiny333:

Yes.

I am Waterboy on most of the forums which I am a member.... that name was taken here

I have been looking at Mercenary for a little while. They have some items that I am very interested in. I may have to contact them about a Rosetta/Symphony system.

Thank you for your input. I appreciate it.

@ Marineville:

That is a killer setup!

Probably going to be too expensive for me (right now).

But I am glad to know that it works as well I had read on their (Apogee) site.

Thank you for the input.

ok ... please allow me to throw this into the mix:

I was planning on getting a Toft ATB24.

If I do that, then I will probably end up getting the Lynx Aurora - due to money.

I have been looking at a different option: a Mackie Onyx 2480

If I go with that unit, I should be able to afford (at least) the Rosetta 800, or the AD-16x (but will have no DA unit yet).

My question is this: in your opinion - is it more important to worry about the convertors (Apogee or Lynx), or worry about my Mixer/Pre's (Toft or Mackie Onyx)?

I realize that is a bit off-topic, but I would appreciate any opinions.

Take care.

I purchased an Apogee Ensemble clocked to an Apogee Big Ben when it first came out and was immediately pleased with the results over my previous DA-7 / RME Hammerfall setup.

However, after picking up the Aurora 16 and firewire interface (also clocked to the Big Ben), I can say that I experienced an improvement in punch, clarity, and quality in my recordings and playback.

Though I found the product manuals for the Aurora to be confusing and sub-par, once everything is setup properly on your system, it's a dream to work with.

Anyone knows if Llynx gone have some kind of exchange deals? I haven't had my PCI card for more then 5 months and been waiting to upgrade my G5 until the PCIe card came out (which it apparently now have, woa!! :-)
Oh, and!
Have nothing more than good to say about running Logic and AES16/Aurora16. An absolute delight. Highly recommend that combination.
cheers

Cool. Thanks for the input, sir.

I bet there are going to be a lot of people that are interested in an exchange type of deal - from the AES16 to the AES16e. Kinda curious to see how this unfolds.

Thanks again for the reply, sir.

Take care.

just a quick head's up, and might be incorrect. I spoke with Doug from SoundPure today and made a comment about the AES16e. Apparently folks are selling them as a pre-order, but they're not available yet. His comment was that Lynx said it would be another 2-3 weeks.

YMMV, but they're usually pretty good on the info.

I'm hoping they have them out when I visit Mercenary in a few weeks

You are correct Yoda. I got an email from the folks at VK saying they didn't have it yet, but would be happy to have it drop-shipped when it comes out in a couple weeks.

It's going to be a very long couple of weeks...

Spoke with one of the Lynx folks yesterday. End of next week supposedly (direct quote "10 days"). Let's hope they're correct.
