Pro Tools HD works on Macbook Pro, what about iMac?

I love the idea of having Magma expansion with PT HD Core Card in it and running PT HD on my Macbook Pro.
But because there is no Express Card slot on any iMac, it is not possible to run PT HD on iMac - Am I correct?

You're right! HD systems only work with PCI cards. Time to move to a MacPro !

I think you didn't understand my question, but it's not your fault. You just happened to not read what I typed in...

Which part of your wonderfully insightful question did I not read?

Either you worded your question wrong or I totally misunderstood you!
Anyway...good luck with the whole Protools HD on iMac thing

If I can run PT HD on a Macbook Pro, why would I move to Mac Pro?

Find me a powerbook/macbook user using an expansion chassis who is happy with the performance and stability of the system.
It is the sort of thing that you do only as a last resort.

You'll get more DSP out of a bog standard macbook- the only reason I would consider a laptop based TDM system would be if I needed something I could take on a plane.
A G5 and PCI based TDM rig is the way to go on a budget- you could pick an entire system up for $4-5k.

(And there is no need to be snide).

yup, haven't heard anybody running PTHD on Magma Chassis without stability issues.

this also includes Magma Chassis (or any Chassis) running on G5/MacPro's.

gotta wait for that "mid-level" PT system...

hey, thanks for the info... I thought it would be fine...
What kind of issues could I expect from running HD1 through Magma 2 slot chassis on a Macbook Pro? Originally I wanted to keep the HD Core card in Magma because of the ability of taking it to location work, but I have not expected any issues.

Magma ExpressBox1: Cabled PCI Express for Desktops and Laptops

I'd still rather bring a G5 or mac pro with at least HD2, tho, the footprint of this is much smaller and if you were say, on vacation and wanted to get work done w/o dealing with LE, for 800$ its a pretty cool setup if it works clean... (we will know from at least two users in this thread ) - for some people this may be a cool. it's an option for HD on the go anyway.

workin on a express card to pcie 4x system today.
will put it in a 1HE Chassis with PTHD 2 mounted vertical, removeable SATA HD and power supply.

i think HD3 is possible, we'll see were the limits are.

There are apparently problems with this, it's surfaced in several other threads.

We've got an HD4 (PCI) running via magma on a Mac Pro (PCIe). Works fine.

Sorry for waking up an old thread. But how is the stability with the new generation macbook pro when working with Pro Tools HD?

Where do you connect the magma expressbox? into the SDXC slot on the macbook?

It may be possible On iMacs with the next revision, and the addition of thunderbolt.

Sonnet announced TB enabled expansion chassis at NAB, about the size of an external hard drive.

Sonnet - New Product Announcement at NAB 2011

Will have to wait to see if Avid will certify it though.

Magma is onboard with the thunderbolt expansion. I signed up at their website to find out when the release date will be.

It's the early in the game, but I noticed this from SOS.

"I run my ProTools Hd system via a mac mini/ Thunderbolt display/ magma chassis, it works really well and is acttually cheaper than buying a mac pro just to put the pci e cards in."

So it appears that it's now possible via Thunderbolt.
