Controlling Cubase 4 from a Yamaha Motif

I want to use my Yamaha Motif 6 as a control keyboard for Cubase Studio 4. I'm using a Motif Classic, not the ES and XS versions, though I guess that the settings needed will probably be the same in any case. I'd like the Motif's transport section to control play/stop/rec/ffwd/rewind/etc in Cubase too and the faders to control channel volumes.

How should I configure the device manager in Cubase to enable me to achieve this? When I look for the Motif in the device manager a bewildering array of MIDI in/out options come up, many more than for any other keyboard I have, and I'm not sure which ones I need to enable and which to disable.

And should I go for MIDI control via the standard MIDI connections on the Motif or use the USB port?

Any advice would be most appreciated. Many thanks.
