Logic 8= more plugins

Because of my frustration with Digi and PTLE I purchased the $99 dollar upgrade to Logic 8 Express (I owned Logic 7 Express from years ago). I started a new mix and my first impression is WOW, Logic is much more CPU efficient than PTLE. I can do way more in Logic than PTLE. My Logic session has a total of 45 tracks (some stereo/some mono), most with some EQ adjustments, 3 verbs, 2 delays, 3 Drumagog's, several tracks with compression, and all with CPU left over. There is no way I could have all this in PTLE. Keep in mind that I am using the EXACT same computer that I use PT on. G5 Dual 1.8/1.5 Gig RAM

It also seems that my mix came together more quickly in Logic. I have no explanation for this, but it is just my first impression. I am really excited about what the future holds for me with Logic.

Go figure...

P.S. What is the general opinion of Logic's "Channel EQ?" I think it's nice for small adjustments/tone shaping.

That was my experience as well. I hadn't used Logic for a looong time (used to have an Audiowerk8 before going to PT's), but I felt way less "bloated" after going from PTLE/002 to Logic/Duet on the same hardware. I was running at 512 samples with no pops or clicks on PT and I can run at 128 in Logic. Glad you're liking it too.

The plug-ins in L8 are pretty useful (the new comps are getting pretty good feedback), but I still bought the Waves Musician's Bundle 2 for RenEQ, RenComp and RenVox. Of course, that was before i read what WUP was....even so, I really like these plugs and the price was right at $150. I see the light on upgrading these core plugs now....but i'm gonna wait and keep my eye out for something from a different company before laying down any real money. Perhaps when McDSP has an AU bundle. But for now, for my skill level and needs....I feel well covered with the built in Logic plugs + the Waves MB2.

Hope you have fun,
- alex

at first I thought you mean more as in variety of plugins rather than more plugins run...

I don't notice that much of a difference, I never had problems with pro tools not running what I needed it too. I do know what you mean though about the mix coming together quicker. I have the same experience with logic.

One of the main reasons I bought logic was because of the plugins. I could either spend about 700-800 for similar quality plugins for pro tools or buy logic for only $500... and I get a great DAW with no limits to boot!

I started on ProTools 3, then had a Mix + for a long while. Then I made the jump to Logic and a G5. That was a massive leap in processing power...MASSIVE! Now I split time between an HD2 rig, and Logic 8 + Mac Pro. The 4x Mac Pro's are so powerful that I haven't seen the limits of either. (I use alot of RTAS with ProTools)

I really like the Logic Channel EQ. It's quick, takes no processing power (literally), and sometimes really is the best EQ for the job. Many times I've later tried to replace the Logic Channel EQ with a more expensive one, and Logic EQ won out.

Yeah, the channel EQ and the compressor plug-in are both quite good in Logic. That means a lot; you can get a long way with just those two, together with balance and panning.

I wonder why it is that people feel mixes come together more quickly in Logic. I don't have enough PT experience to make a fair comparison, but I've watched other (more experienced) engineers mix my material in PT and DP and they were faster than I would have been in Logic, I think...
