Question VST host for room correction

I really want to use the new IK Multimedia ARC pluggin.

IK Multimedia

But it is designed to be used as the last plugin in your master section. Maybe the guys at IK are better than me, but I know myself well enough to know that I will forget to disable it before rendering.

When I saw them at NAMM I told them that and they suggested that I use a VST host program to go between my software and soundcard. My suggestion to them was that they should create that program. I know just making it a VST is the easy way, but for it's price I think it sould be a bit more.

Does anyone know of any VST Host programs the will do what I want?

The other option would be to buy an Onkyo or Integra processor that has Audyssey built in.

Jay, that stuff is really just a band-aid, and not a viable solution to bass problems (or any other problems) in your room. I tested an Audyssey and found their claims to be mostly fraudulent. Look here:

There was a review of that system in the Project Studio Network podcast....

Basically the guy said the mic was good for recording his guitar & the ARC plug was somewhat better than having nothing at all...it brought his sound closer to what he wanted, but didn't get it there.. Like Ethan said...it's just a band-aid.

I've always thought those EQ based stunts were a bad idea. This is why: they always f*&k with the sound of your monitors. You've spent a lot of time developing a mental translation of how those monitors sound, and now you're gonna toss it all out the window? Seems to me the thing to do is get the room to not mess with your perceptions & keep the mental translation part in tact.

If you really do want to do something like that, why don't you find you a car audio buddy with an RTA. RTA your mix position, straighten it out as much as you can with whatever EQ plug you have & save it as a preset. It'll be a bunch cheaper than that ARC setup & do the same thing.

Just my $.02

Thanks for the replies. Not exactly what I was looking for, but VERY helpful.

What really got me excited about Audyssey are all the good reviews. The review that really got me interested was Stephen St. Croix's review/experience in The Fast Lane in the Mix January 2006 issue.

I'll attach the artical I scanned.

I'm still reading the review you linked, plus the links in that review.

thanks,
~Jay

Page 1 is too big. But page two can still be helpful. If you want I can email the PDF.

Right - do you want the truth or do you prefer a feel-good answer?

Seriously, real physics problems require real physics solutions. Modal correction is not something that can be wrapped into a plug-in.

I find all the favorable reviews of Audyssey (and similar products) disheartening because it proves that the majority of reviewers are clueless about what constitutes good sound. Yeah sure, I can make any room, or any recording for that matter, sound less tubby by cutting 200 Hz. But is this really what you want in a control room where accuracy is needed for making portable mixes?
