I got the GForce/M-Audio Future Retro Pack a while back and really like it. It has their MInimonster, Oddity, Oscar and Mellotron synths.

A really good free synth is Crystal. Crystal VST Instrument Lots of features and as complex as you'd like to go. I love the "Breed" feature--it lets you cross-pollinate two settings and it gets crazy fast.

+1 on the GForce 'Future Retro Pack', with the Minimonstamoog and impOscar being, in my opinion, the 'funkiest'. I think I just saw recently that all GForce stuff is on sale right now too. think it was at audiomidi.com and possibly other places too.

My 2nd suggestion for funk synth and other analog sounds is Arturia's Analog Factory 2.0 For the money you get lots of very playable presets from their moog, prophet, CS80 and Jupiter 8 emulations. Less editable than the 'full' version, but full of great and useable sounds.

Third place would go to Rob Papen's Albino 3. It's a modern analog synth plugin in the tradition of Virus, Indigo etc. Something about the sounds on the Albino always stands out to me, and it has a great built in arpeggiator as well.

lastly, Native Instruments Reaktor has some great modules for funky synths. I use one of their oldest, the 'ManyMoog' for lots of my synth stuff. Plus Reaktor comes with literally hundreds of strange noise making modules for you to mess with.

Funk on. (as opposed to 'Funk Off' ??)
