Upgrading Powerbook G4 1.67 to Macbook 2.2.

I am getting ready to finally upgrade my Powerbook G4 w/1.5 gigs of Ram.

I have just upgraded to Ableton Live 7 Suite. When i have only ONE midi track with the ANALOG instrument being played with a midi keyboard, some presets make my CPU run up to 90%.....and this is when the system starts choking, and I can't even play the sound I want.

Only a few presets do this. But in general, once I have 5 or 6 tracks going in Live, maybe a dozen plugins...the whole thing starts choking up pretty bad. It is incredibly frustrating. And if i have more than one reverb, it doesn't stand a chance.

For the record, it did the same thing with Live 6.

My Laptop just got back from Applecare....new logic board, cooling system, battery, etc...they just brand new stuff in it, so I'm sure this laptop is up to spec...

I am also running Pro Tools 7.3 & Ableton Live at the same time via rewire everyonce in a while...

----------------

So all I can afford is a new Mackbook, NOT A PRO.

From what I understand, The MB & MBPro are basically the same computer minus the video card and screen size.

I would get the Black Mackbook 2.2 Intel Core 2 Duo w/ 4 gigs Ram.

So is it worth the upgrade?

love you guys.

cheers.

i just upgraded from a 1.5 G4 to a 2.33 C2D MBP, and it's fairly dreamlike. No extensive testing yet though.

I have the White Macbook 2.2 Intel Core 2 w/2 gigs Ram and primarily use Ableton Live 7. I'm very much a happy camper. Haven't had to freeze any tracks yet. I was going to spend the money on the MBP, but the salesman insisted that for audio, the macbook would suffice. He was correct so far.

Are you sure they're new? I doubt Apple stocks logic boards for 3 year old models, you probably got a refurb.
Aside from screen and shared graphics, Macbooks have fewer ports, something you might wanna think about.

It's definitely worth the upgrade.

I don't understand your question.

I think what you're asking is;

"Am I going to see a performance improvement between a machine with a 1.5ghz CPU with 1.5gb RAM machine and a machine with a 4.4ghz CPU with 4gb RAM machine"

You were running at 90%. Worst case scenario is you now can run three times as much stuff. Best case scenario, you don't just switch all your data over (and can just move projects over as/when needed) and can 'start fresh'. Worst case scenario - it sounds to me like you've done something majorly messy to get yourself in that situation - either leaky 3rd party software or using stock channel strip presets in Ableton? If so, why not find a way of working that suits you and your music rather than what suits Ableton's stock channel strips?

If you're asking whether you should wait and buy a MBP instead of a MB, here's a couple of links for you;

MacBook Pro Tech Specs
I'm sure you can compare the (seemingly similar) figures yourself.

Buy the laptop with 512mb RAM (or as little as you can buy) and do a 3rd party RAM upgrade to save some coins - but a quick search would have told you that also.
