Thread Starter | Tracking Synths: Digital vs Pre-amp
I have heard that the big boys track all synths and mpcs through a DI or a preamp with DI. Is this better than tracking straight in through lightpipe or spdif? what would you choose and why?

Part of the sound you hear when you play your hardware synths is their DA converters, it would be a shame to lose that quality by taking a digital out(If available) into your DAW and make them sound like SoftSynths ..... | |

yeah Rezz is right, i track everything through my sebatron pre DI, it just gives it a so much character. I would suggest a pre with DI, or good DI.

Better yet, send them through a guitar or bass amp and mic them!

If you like the sound you got from the MPC... go straight to your digital (lightpipe or spdif..) Peace Thierry |

Just an FYI, the benefit of tracking through pre's and DI's may take more time than what's necessary for a given project. There are tons of ways to get that linear & non-linear distortion that our ears like from the analog with plugins. For speed just render the fx to the wave file, and mix from that state. If it makes one feel correct to pre amp or DI, then do so. Not always necessary esp due to the time it takes, and one's delivery method of the song. |
