Logic crashing - Large comps seem to be the problem...

Hi all-

System: Quad 2.66, OS X 10.4.11, Logic 8, Apogee Ensemble, 3 x UAD-1 cards.

I'm working on a new LP and have done some extensive comping on the backup harmony vocals...about 14 tracks or so.

A few days back Logic started hosing all of the sudden when I was trying to record 2 tracks of cello. I've gone through the song, killed UAD-1 plugs, frozen takes, muted tracks, all to no avail. I just tried systematically deleting certain tracks to see if there was a track that was perhaps the issue and it seems the heavily comped vocals were the issue. When deleted the track would record the new track no problem. Also, when I simply flattened or flattened and mered the BU vocal tracks the recording function would work fine again as well...

I'm glad to have found a work-around, but I'm not sure I'm ready to flatten these tracks yet and am annoyed I have to at all.

Anyone else had this issue? Any other fixes/work-arounds I might look at?

Thanks!

Lee

Yep - me too.. Logic 8 can't handle a 10-20 take comping. I didn't experience many crashes but Logic will not allow me to save! The work around is to save all the time, and once Logic can't save anymore, you copy your comp-track, close the project, re-open the last saved version and paste in the comp... yep, that's great... I also have had the same problem with many edits on the track. I had 4 drumtrack in a 4 min song, that needed HEAVY editing. Then Logic started to do the "Can't save"-thing and I had some crashes as well.... AAARRRRHHGGGG

I record everything in REPLACE mode. That way the comp feature (which i really hate) is turned off.

i've had this problem too but not so much lately! perhaps the 'pro apps' update helped!

what i do with the take folders once i have a comp i'm happy with is
1) duplicate the track
2) copy the take folder onto that track
3) mute take folder
4) mute track
5) hide track
6) then flatten the original take folder

seems to be working well for me

Great suggestion! I don't know why that didn't occur to me. It's similar to what I do with folders when I'm just getting things cleaned up (pre "takes" function in Logic).

Thanks for the feedback guys.

OK. So I've got yet another song doing this and I've just gone through the process described above and even that's not enough for this one. The one way I seem to be able to get things working is to flatten and then get all comp'd tracks out of the arrange page entirely. I have to delete them as muting and hiding is not good enough to stop the crashes. One all comp'd takes are flattened and gotten out of the arrangement I can once again track.

This sucks.

Edited to add that I was able to get things working by dropping all muted (track and actual comps muted) parts into a folder and then hiding everything. I could probably parse out a more exact sequence of events, but I'm just excited I can actually record vocals now. Let's here it for being able to capture that inspiration while the iron's hot
