MBox 2 Pro - noise on o/p issue

Hi,

I am setting up a Mac Mini 2.0Ghz + MBox 2 Pro setup. I am running OS 10.4.10 & PTLE 7.1.3.

The Mbox 2 Pro is connected to a Denon Hi-Fi amp for playback. Unfortunately as soon as I connect the monitor outs of the Mbox 2 Pro to the inputs of the Denon I get unacceptable levels of noise out of the speakers.

Key things to note here:
  • The noise comes out both the MBox channel on the HiFi amp AND the other connected channel - Mac in-built audio (It is actually LOUDER on the in-built audio channel!).
  • The noise disappears immediately if either the audio or the FW cables to the MBox are disconnected.
  • The h/phone output of the MBox is totally clean and functions as expected with PT.
  • The noise is software dependant (i.e. its level/timbre corresponds to activity on screen).
Once I register the Mbox I should get the 7.4 update through the post but I have a funny felling that this is a hardware issue.

I am also considering lifting the earth on the audio cables to see if that fixes anything (although I am sceptical because everything is powered from a single mains strip).

Any help or suggestions will be extremely gratefully recieved!

I believe you need to get hold of high quality balanced cables. The output of the MBox is balanced and its likely your connecting it to an unbalanced source.

Thanks Donny,

I am going unbalanced into the Hi-Fi's phono connectors. I fully expect and accept that I lose 6dB when doing this but it should not induce processor dependant noise (it didn't when I had an original USB MBox).

Interestingly the noise dissappears if I unplug the Mac's in-built audio from the Hi-Fi amp and use just the MBox and vice versa.

I am going to try lifting the screens on one set of audio cables to see if that breaks this interference loop. Otherwise I might have to come up with some way to transformer isolate one set of audios. What would be a cheap way of doing that?

VERY frustrating when this whole system worked fine with a USB MBox.
