Quality impulse responses ?

When using Mac I tried Altiverb IR (especiallly churches and cathedrals) and found them very great sounding. Then I switched to PC and tried Waves IR reverb and had also a possibility to try their churches IR (I am actually interested only in that), but to my disappointment found that Waves churches do not sound at all as good as Altiverb (rather thin and poor comparing to Altiverb). There are some other convolution reverbs much cheaper than Waves (Voxengo Pristine Space, SIR). I wonder - where can really great sounding church and cathedral impulses be found ? I suppose that Altiverb IR work only with Altiverb ...

I think SIR is OK, most of samples you can find online aren't great (16 bit etc.) But still they beat most plug in reverbs, and now the latency is down to a reasonable time where Logic can auto delay compensate for it... check out Gigapulse also...

Could you please mention some websites where various quality IRs from churches etc. could be found ?

try also:
www.noisevault.com
www.echochamber.ch

this is where you will get most of em-
try them and tell me if they are comparable with
altiverb sound.

watch out at noisevault: some wavs are converted different
bitrates(mp3s etc..) so the quality varies.
some noce pmc and 960l though.
cheers

I looked at echochamber but it is difficult to find what I want - some churches or cathedrals (not interestedin any sampled gear). There are just some zip files. How to know which is which ? Altiverb´s St..John´s church was fantastic ...

There is a new impulse set up at noisevault, although not a cathedral, it is a very nice true stereo true surround set of a great hall.

I hope to really raise the quality of the impulses on the site over time.

Hey cAPS,
I downloaded some of your IR's but would I get them to work in Altiverb?

Thanx

I am not an altiverb user, but there are a few on the forum, and I think they can load them in without a problem.

Use something like Barbabatch I think..

good luck,

Isn't my site know to you then?

http://www.xs4all.nl/~fokkie/IR.htm

I have a selection of my IR's for free here. Already for over a year, and there are two churches there. Most files there can be converted to wav since they are regular SDII files. Some of them are already converted to wav. Since i have limited space i cannot house more versions of the same IR there. Convert them yourself if you want to work on PC.

I found that the IR1 of Waves is differend sounding to Altiverb and TL Space. I have no idea why that is. I have all three of them here. I compared using the same IR.

I read somewhere that IR1 doesn't use full convolution and instead a hybrid between convolution and regular delay&filter based verb. If I remember correctly they emulate the reverb tail and truncate the impulse response to something pretty short - this way cpu load is kept lower than a full convolution method - this allows realtime settings to not be so cpu heavy. I know the Voxengo and SIR plugins are true convolution reverb plugins.

And that is exactly what i hear. To me, it sounds like a Renaissance Reverb with an IR as basis. It doesn't sound like a convolution reverb to me.

But the contradiction is that it is even more CPU hungry then Altiverb and TL space.

Thanks Fokke. Any other thoughts? as I was not impressed with WAVES IR1.

I found a good thread about TL Space at the DUC
