Pro Tools wont open some sessions

Hi!

I am running Pro Tools 7.1 LE (Mbox2) on Windows XP Pro.

My problem:

I burned my sessions files on dvd-discs. I reinstaled Windows XP Pro. I
instaled PT 7.1 and I moved the sessions files to my hard-disc
(formated). When I am trying to open the session all goes ok; I can see
all the tracks and the mix window with all the plugins. All the trakcs
are present. BUT THEN I receive a message "Windows has entered a problem and needs to be closed"!

There are sessions that opens ok. I can start also a new session without
problem.

What can I do to solve this problem, and save my sessions?

Thank You for your help!

Start a new session, at same bit depth and sample rate....then choose import session data, try adding one track, and then one by one.

Does that work? if not, session may be corrupted.

a work around.

I've had this happen once before. It's very frustrating.

One work around that worked for me, and may work for you, is to create a new session and use the "Import Session Data" feature.

This way you can create a new session with all of your mix/plugins/rides/everything from your session (as well as the audio) and get back to work.

I hope this helps you,

Chris

Thank You for your reply.

I tried to import session data to a new session. It goes all well for some of the tracks, but there are tracks that I import and windows says "the program needs to be closed". So few of the tracks are ok, but some are not.

Is there a possibility to repair somehow the tracks (session data) that won't open correctly?

I have encountered similar problems using PT on Macs, and I have found that the issue is often a corrupt fade file. Try trashing all of the fades, and having it rebuild them on open...

I don't think that the session or per track data gets messed up in anyway, it usually seems to be one of the audio files on that particular track.

Also, sometimes plug ins seem to be able to become corrupt, you might try importing tracks without plug ins

I tried to delete the fade folder, but that didn't solve the problem, yet.

How can I import session data in Pro Tools LE without plugins?

Thanks for your replies!

Sorry, I'm back....

Sorry to leave you hanging, you must be frustrated "to state the obvious".

Ok, so you have a very tricky problem here. PONCIVAL may be right about the plug ins being a problem.

Here's a stupid question; is this an earlier than 7.1 session that you are trying to open in a newly upgraded PT system? Sometimes these little upgrades can start creating trouble way after they are "upgraded".

3. options that may work;

a. EASY; Do you have automatic session file backups? Just open an earlier session, a few minutes earlier would do. This will work if just the one session in question is corrupt. If you do not have auto session file-backup than just open an earlier session. Even though it's not the mix you are after it's better than what you have to work with now which is, unfortunately, nothing.

If that doesn't work then.....

b. comfortable; bring the drive/session over to a friends house and have them try and open the session in question. Maybe it's just a plug-in quirk on yours. If they can open it go thru the session and remove as many plug ins as you can do without. Any sound designer plugs (verb/delay/phazer) print. Slim it down and save it as a new session in a new folder on that drive. Go home and see if it opens.

If that doesn't work then....

c. Tricky/ The Plug IN; Try IMPORTING SESSION DATA just one track at a time. This is time consuming but very telling. If you get to open 5 things 5 different times and then all of a sudden a new track is corrupt THERE IS YOUR PROBLEM - THE PLUG IN ON THAT TRACK. you may get lucky and it's just an aux. track with a delay or something. If it's an audio track start over, but this time when you get to the problem track, where the session shut down last, go to the SESSION DATA IMPORT INFORMATION box (where you can select if you want; automation, plug ins, etc.) and de-select Plug in assignments and settings) now import the session data which will just be the problem audio track.
If this does the trick keep a some paper and pencil next to you to write down all of the problem tracks. You may have several in the session and it will keep closing down but, if this works, eventually you will get everything up. At worst maybe just one track will never open and you'll loose it but you will have your song.

Too bad we can't bill DIGI for studio time spent getting stuff like this to work.

I really hope this helps you to get back on track.

Best,
Chris

Hi again,

thank you C.Judd Karn for your reply and your time!

I tried all you recommended, but I am still confused with this.

1. I have tried to import session data to a new session. Sometimes a track opens correctly and I can listen it, BUT sometimes the same track does open but I get the message "Pro Tools Application has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I have tried to open all the tracks one by one! But I can't know were's the problematic track.

2. How can I delete all the plugins for once? I can't find SESSION DATA IMPORT INFORMATION -box? I have Pro Tools LE, not HD.

The session can't find Aplitube LE 1.1 plug! The plugin works ok when I try it in new session. Why is that?

3. The session file backups are present, but I get the same problem with them.

I am really confused!

Do somebody have an idea what I can try next?

I am happy getting your assistance.

Import session data works with BOTH LE and HD....

its right below the "import audio to track" in the file menu!

but in le, there are no import options. You can pick which tracks are imported, but not the specific data.

Real annoying.

Only thing to do is import tracks one at a time, try to find a pattern for the tracks that don't work, narrow down the bad plugin (it's likely only one), and temporarily remove it from your plugins folder. Then the session should load. Slow, but it should work.

Hi.

The problem is solved!

I use waves plugs: Musician 1 bundle and Rennaisance bundle. I have paid for all the plugs I use.

I remarked that the sessions that have more than 4 Rverb-plug won't open. So I removed all the Rennaisance bundle plugs. After that all the sessions that didn't open worked correctly.

A mirracle happen! I have been working whit this thing for weeks.

Why do not the Rverb plug work normally? Can I move back the Rennaisance plugs to the plug-folder?

Thanks very much again for your help!

I have the same problem with my Waves SSL bundle (not cracked)

Im able to import session data track by track without issue. I just use the SSL stuff using the audio suite after I get the settings I want.

Thank you C.Judd!
I have been searching the net for hours trying to work out why one of my session files which I was just using yesterday kept crashing.

I used you advice to import sessions files (which I'd never thought of doing as this is just a MIDI project). Having done the usual ditching databases and prefs, this worked.

Turns out it was the piano track I recorded last. I can't think why one MIDI track within a session should cause a problem, but there we go.

Best get back to work then... I owe you a pint C.Judd!
