I bought a fireface 800 and swapped it for the ensemble after 1 week because of the preamps. Really love the ensemble.

Word on the street is often:
RME or Apogee is your best bet. some like one, and some like the other.
And the duet as a portable option.. great bet. or a portable rackbag for the ensemble/fireface+laptop (in a rack drawer e.g 2u). It´s heavy to drag around, but very nice quality wise. I use it with my MBP. Has enough room for laptop, charger, cables, and 2-3 small mics.

HI

i worked with a 2882+DSP and a ULN2+DSP for many years and was very pleased with the sound, but i sold the 2882 because of issues with the Adat port.

now i have two fireface 800 and i kept the ULN2 (my monitors are plugged on those converters : excellent), the fireface is bullet proof in terms of drivers and stability, as is the metric halo.

BUT, there is some news from metric halo, it seems (i read this on the mailling list) they are going to offer an optional card (to be installed by the user) for the +DSP wich doubles the DSP power (some kind of Duende with Channel Strip plug-in now that we have the "console connect" : see web site) and adds an adat port (a working one this time).

but what makes me want to go back to metric halo is that with this card and the new software you will be able to have unified mixing between multiple boxes, no manufacturer ever do that before (in firewire), an headphone heaven for live tracking studios.
