So I Demo'd Some Amp Sims...

I've been using Logic 7's and that's pretty dismal.

I downloaded demos of Guitar Rig 2 and Amplitube 2

Initial thoughts (no final verdict yet):

Better than Logic, most definitely.

Still...weird though. But then I thought it's because my monitors are pointed at me in a way that is very unlike a typical guitar cab. I feel like this may be at the crux of why many people feel "distanced" by simulators and why they sound unnatural.

Couldn't decide which one sounded better (GR or Amplitube), but maybe soon. Guitar Rig was way more flexible though.

Party on,
Alex

I demoed all those and finally settled on Amplitube 2. Overall, it has some great features and sounds. Guitar rig has some really neat efx, and sounds great on clean stuff, but add in heavy distortion and it sounds very cruddy to me. Amplitube was just better for distortion, GTR was nice too but a bit too cumbersome

as always, play with some of the presets in amplitube and start adjusting to make your own, It takes some tweaking but you can get some nice tones fat tones.

I can't wait untill the next gen stuff comes out that makes it even better, whenever and whatever that may be

I have NI Komplete 4 and therefore Guitart Rig 2, but I would NEVER buy that plug. Overdrive sounds horrible, really unuseable. I like the FX a bit, but I also heve a PODXT and I love it's FX (although the ampsims are only good enough for practice/recording some ideas, unless I run through a tube amp).

If you are using the speaker sims in amplitube or GRig for distortion, you are messing up. Turn off those speakers and put an impulse in line behind it if you want to really start getting tone.

An impulse - i.e. using convolution for the cab sound. It's a pretty reliable way of improving or expanding the pallet of amp sim software.

Me, I like a pallet of sounds for amps. A little Amplitube here, a little GR, a little freeware amp sim here. I pretty much track with my signal run out through my POD and record both the clean and effected. Then I amp sim the clean signal.

Is there a place to get the impulses for a cab? A certain reverb comes with them?

SimulAnalog Guitar Suite

I highly recommend checking this out too. No fancy interface, not a lot in the way of effects, but for the price of free, it's hard to beat... of course you need to be able to use VST, but I think there are wrappers out there?
