4 gig Ram on my new XP 32 bit quad sys...3 gig "switch" y or n?

Hey Everyone...

I am about to put together my new QUAD core PC...for running Cubase SX3 and 3 UAD-1 cards...

q6600 cpu
ASUS Commando motherboard (4 PCI slots)
4 gigs of Corsair performance RAM
2 500 gig 7200 drives..16 mb buffer
750 watt power supply

My question, for this computer, do i NEED to do the 3gb switch thing?

if I do nothing...windows gets 2 gigs and programs gets 2 gigs...

I'm thinking of leaving it like that..since i have alot more CPU power than my present sony vaio p4 3.0 with 2 gigs of ram..

Thoughts???

Steinberg doesn't 'officially' support the 3gb switch in SX3 but most people that use it say it works fine. If you're going to have 4gb of ram I'd say use it, every little bit helps, especially if you're running sample libraries..

The 3gb switch does not work with UAD cards with Windows XP. It will with Vista.

I have XP and when I take the UAD cards out, it works.

If someone else knows different, I would sure like to know.

I found this on Cubase.net.

Apparently the switch works also when you have 2 GB's. And this might also be interesting for UAD cards owners.

Here are all of the steps to do this in one comprehensive list:

1. Download masm32 (masm32.com) and install it (after it installs, it brings up a command prompt window, just close it. Do NOT have it perform any of those functions.)
2. Copy the Nuendo3.exe to another location for backup purposes
3. Place another copy of Nuendo3.exe (or whichever sequencer you use) in the C:\masm32\bin directory
4. Open up your command prompt and type "cd c:\masm32\bin"
5. Type "editbin /largeaddressaware Nuendo3.exe"
6. Move the copy of the Nuendo3.exe file you just modified back to the regular Nuendo directory
7. Open your boot.ini file (located in C: - you may have to open any folder and go Tools->Folder Options->View->Select Show Hidden Files and Folders and UNcheck the "Hide protected operating system files" to see this file)
8. Add "/3GB" after "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS..." so it should look like similar to "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /3GB /fastdetect...."
9. If you have a UAD-1 card, you also need to add "/Userva=2900" after the /3GB switch, so it should look like similar to "multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /3GB /Userva=2900 /fastdetect...."
10. Save the modified boot.ini file
11. Reboot

I tried this switch before and it didn't work for me. I found out it was because I had a UAD-1 card and I didn't have the "/Userva=2900" switch in there. Now it works just fine for me. Now I can go past the ~1.3GB threshold without crashes. This should also work for any sampler (Halion, Kontakt, etc.).

If upon reboot your system is sluggish and nearly useless, just open your boot.ini file and take the switch(es) back out, save it, and reboot. Also don't forget to replace the Nuendo3.exe file with the backup you created.
Cubase.net :: View topic - Is it really this simple to fix the 1.4GB crashes?!

Cubase.net :: View topic - The 3GB switch ROCKS!!!

I'm going to try this on my machine now.

So essentially, If you have 4 gigs, your audio software only can use 2 gigs????? Is there a point for me to buy 4 gigs with my new system?

Hey frankie,

that is normal becuase that's all that a 32 bit OS is capable of addressing, if you want the extra gig to work you'll have to change to vista 64...as far as i know there is NO way around this.

I have decided NOT to go 64 bit because alot of my plugins etc are NOT 64 bit compatible...

do u think my new machine will be powerful enough?

Quad core 6600
Asus Commando board
3 Uad-1 cards
2 500 gig sata drives..
750 watt power supply

4 gigs Corsair xps memory installed (at least)

...

Should Kick the living crap out of my Sony VAIO 3.0 p4 with 2 gigs of ram eh?

Thats more than enough and should keep you from needing to upgrade for a good long time....

Sounds like a great system. Back up to DVDS and get an external hard drive for backups as well. (cannot have too many backups!)

Make sure you do the XP tweaks for audio.

Enjoy,

32 bit apps can run into a 64 bit operating system. however, I read somewhere that there should be a little penalty. I did the test running sonar 32 bits in the wXP pro 64 platform and the results were the same as in 32 bit WXP. The same number of plugins opened. Maybe the penalty thing was not true. Anyway, I do not see why it would have some penalty since a 64 bit processor should handle 32 bit instructions natively.

I would go for the 64 bit platform, you can run 32 apps AND 64 if you want to. And dont have to worry about switches for RAM assignment.

I'm Running a Q6600 quad machine with 4 gigs of ram, using XPpro64. I haven't had any problem with any of my plugs or apps running on the 64 bit OS. there are certain little annoyances, like iTunes giving you a warning every time you start it (still works fine). and the Zune skin for windows explorer (changes default blue tool bars and borders to black) doesn't install. but all in all it seems to be working fine.
