Can I do it with a Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 1.06 Ghz?

Hi Everyone,

My work is purchasing me on of those Sony Vaio VGN-TZ series as I am always mobile. As I have a very little idea of the duo chips my question is so I can spend money on other equipment will this laptop have enough power to do some fairly serious music production of electronic music (so very little recording). I will be using either Cubase or Ableton depending on how the cpu likes it.

The laptop specs are:
IntelĀ® Core 2 Duo Processor 1.06 Ghz
2gb Ram
Processor System Bus: 533MHz
Cache Memory: 2MB Advanced Smart Cache
Platform: Windows Vista

Also in the near future I will be purchasing the powercore to take load off the cpu. So what do you think? Will I struggle?

Thanks in advance

Kind Regards,

Karv

karv..
people cant tell u unless you state your PERFORMANCE NEEDS.
lots of laptop tips if u search my back posts to save me retyping.
so.what are your max track /plug in/softsynth needs in a song ???
couple of main points.
try n use 7200 rpm drives. check whether that laptop has a 7200 rpm drive.
also..make sure any pro sound device u use is compatible with
that laptop. and run a test to confirm.
what sound device do u anticipate useing ??
make sure its vista compatible cos lots of people are useing xp instead cos of driver audio probs.
i'm staying xp for now.

Thanks for the tips.

Well I usually use ableton 6 in XP so moving to Vista is a first to me.

I use a M-audio firewire sound card.

I am mainly a Vst person. Usual tracks number I run is about 10 that is:

4-5 for beats
1 - bass
1-2 lead
2 - fx sounds, rythm sound etc

Also usually extra 2-3 bused fx tracks usually reverb plugins on these

I sample all my beats and sometimes use the virus for bass hence ultimatley it is sampled as well.

For mastering and fx's I mainly use waves plugins and also sonalkis and also the inbuilt fx plugins of ableton for things especially like delay and gating. I use waves reverb for reverb.

Lastly other soft synths I use are NI FM8, Atmosphere, Trilogy, Z3ta+ and V-station. However I after getting the right sound I convert these to samples as well.

I mix at 44.1Khz

So with this in mind could I at least get the beef of track out with computer I suggested earlier?

Thanks for any advice

If you want more power, you could ask the IT-guys if they could get you ThinkPad x61, they're available up to 2ghz C2D and they are very portable, downside is the 12" screen is not widescreen and resolution is XGA.

But the VAIO should be ok, unless you are using loads of convolution reverbs etc.

Thanks guy for the reply makes me feel much better.

Yeah I always found that reverbs were the biggest cpu suckers. Hopefully the powercore will change that!

Cheers,
