is there a magma-style chassis for using UAD cards with an iMac G5?

simple question really.
i have an iMac G5 which only has USB and FW ports and no PCI slots of course.
i would love to use UAD cards on this system....
i know that Magma makes an expansion chassis for the Cardbus system but there is no Cardbus slot on the iMac......
iow, is there a USB or FW to PCI adapter/chassis thingy in existence?

tia!!

I once ever heard in an Apple Certified Store here in the area that a PCI-expansion for Firewire exists, it comes in a box as big as a PC tower case, looks crappy, works poorly if at all, and is in no way an option for any serious applications. Apart from that they said there is no way of connecting PCI cards to an iMac. I owned an iMac back then (now sold it and am waiting for my freshly ordered MacBook Pro, yummy!) and was also very interested in connecting PC cards to it. Never found a solution.

Sorry to disappoint you.

Buy a Mac Pro then.

The fastest (useable) port on an iMac is the firewire.

Way less bandwidth than PCI.

It couldn't exist (or work properly) in principle.

Sorry.

let me know if the MacBook Pro has enough power for you....
i am in the market for a new computersystem and was thinking about getting another iMac (they are supposed to come out with new, brushed-aluminum-syle iMacs in August) if they decide to implement PCIe support for that model.
otherwise i guess i will have to go with the Mac Pro and just use a crappy monitor at first (the damn things are expensive)!
my brother just got one of the new MacBook Pro 17" models with 4GB RAM and i am kind of considering asking him to allow me to install PT on it (haha, he is not even a musician but i want to see how viable the MBPs are for serious pro audio).

Apple is deliberately screwing customers into having to invest in the Mac Pro if they want to do any serious audio work imo.
i don' t need an 8-core system; my iMac G5 performs pretty well running PT LE 7.3 with the MPT, many tracks and plugin instantiations at a time....
but as it is a couple years (three)? old now i know it's time to upgrade and i would love to finally get to try the UAD stuff and other PCI-only goodies (don't care about PT HD and will prolly never upgrade; just don't need the power).

thanks James.

i am hoping Apple will just install a damn PCI or Cardbus (ExpressCard) system onto the new iMacs when they come out next month.

not holding my breath for that.

jdjustice,

here in Germany Apple has massive problems delivering the new MacBook Pros as fast as they are ordered. The dealer (same store mentioned before) where I ordered it informed me that it could take another two or three weeks until it arrives, worst case.

Even then I will maybe be a bit "underqualified" to give you a proper answer. I am starting to do my own project on it, meaning in the beginning I will even work only with the built-in audio interface, programming MIDI tracks for virtual instruments (will buy Addictive Drums, hardcore Bass XP and such stuff), and little by little - as the budget allows it - I will add an audio interface, a microphone and monitor speakers to start recording, editing and mixing. It will take months until I am halfway equipped with everything I need (or want, ehe) and can work "seriously".

Sorry to disappoint you.
(Maybe I should put that as my signature )

-- Well, I am sure there are many others here on the forum already owning a MacBook Pro and can tell you how it performs.

Another option- For a lot less money buy a used G5 tower-

Prices are falling. It's a better option for 'serious audio' and you won't be waiting around for any software that is not UB yet.

The G5 is still a very valid computer and you can get them fairly loaded for under $1000, (check craig's list).
