Cool how do you create the Cher voice autotune vocoding effect?..

Hi guys ..
I hear the Cher autotune effect *which she used in the song "Believer"* in a number of songs ..

she must have used an autotune plugin or device to create the tone shift

I am wondering how it was done? ..

Thanks
John

Try this,

If urrr in Pro Tools you can do this. Create a Aux Track. Put Auto Tune on that track. Then create a regular audio track. Now, make sure your Mic iz going through the Auto Tune Aux and that the Aux output iz going to your Audio Track. Put Auto Tune at the tightest setting and make sure urrr in the right key of the song. Mind you, the better the singer the better the outcome.

That should give you the effect urrr looking for.

Hope this helps....

Send a message via Skype™ to Will
just insert autotune on the vocal track and then make the response really quick. if you wanted to you could add extra notes in the graphic mode for extra 'cher'.

Will.

The actual "Cher effect" was fairly complicated but, yeah, seems to me you can get pretty close with AT or other vocal pitch manglers.

Anyhow, it's the devil's work, laddy. Be careful what evil spirits you let into your studio...

The "original" Cher effect was apparantly a Digitech Talker

A similar effect is used on so so much South Asian pop. Living in a predominantly Bengali part of London, I get to hear this stuff, ad infinitum, whether I want to or not, and my God, I am sick of it. Interesting effect though, nonetheless, and probably one that has had widespread influence, given that people don't seem so opposed to blatant autotune-type effects in, say, pop or rock any more.

STOP PRESS! Historical Footnote

Cher's 'Believe' (Dec 1998) was the first commercial recording to feature the audible side-effects of Antares Auto-tune software used as a deliberate creative effect. The (now) highly recognisable tonal mangling occurs when the pitch correction speed is set too fast for the audio that it is processing and it became one of the most over-used production effects of the following years.

In February 1999, when this Sound On Sound article was published, the producers of this recording were apparently so keen to maintain their 'trade secret' process that they were willing to attribute the effect to the (then) recently-released Digitech Talker vocoder pedal. As most people are now all-too familiar with the 'Cher effect', as it became known, we have maintained the article in its original form as an interesting historical footnote.

It was autotune - and it was initially done by a mistake from the tech. The producer loved it, and so did the rest of the world.

It was new and fresh - now its just plain silly.
