I recently bought an OWC Mercury firewire case ( with 911 chipset of course) and a Maxtor 160 gig drive for using at a local studio. My question is simple, has anyone used these drives for pro tools, and if so how did they rate to you? i have not got to use it yet, (should be here in a day or so) but im real curios to see what other people think about them. Thanks Erik fuuck |

They work fine when they work. There's a fair amount of infant mortality among most of these new inexpensive large capacity drives so it's a good idea to test a bunch before committing anything important to a new drive. If you are using a Mac, it's important to use "erase disk" from the finder before using it. I also make sure that Disk First Aid and Disk Warrior can see the drive ok because I find they are far easier to corrupt than SCSI drives used to be. My experience has been that there seems to be no best brand however sticking to recent models having fluid bearings is a really good idea.

I've done really well the last couple years with an IBM deskstar drive in a granite digital enclosure. http://www.granitedigital.com
