So I finally got the M-Tron Mellotron emulation along with an M-Audio Keystation 49. I use a Digi 002R w/ PT. 7.3.1 on a Mac G5.

I have zero experience with MIDI and Instrument Tracks in PT and like I suspected, I couldn't make the setup work so far.......

What I DID manage to do was installing the M-Tron software itself, it shows up as an RTAS instrument and I can play it with the mouse......

The Keystation also shows up on the 'Instrument' track (I enabled 'Instrument' in the View Menu). My first question: I connected the Keystation by USB, is it better to do it thru MIDI and therefore use the MIDI In on the 002?

On the Instrument Track in the PT session I set the Input (in the very top section of the Channel 'strip') to 'USB Keystation49' and the Output to the 'M-Tron' which is inserted as an RTAS plug-in. Correct so far?

What I don't understand though is the setup of the (for me) familiar Input/Output section on the same Intrument track above the Fader. How is the Input set there? It only shows the usual option thru the busses and converters like on any other Audio or Aux track. What do I have to do there?

I understand that I have to bus the Instrument track to an Aux track to be able to record Audio but again, it doesn't work due to the elusive Input situation.

Any help would be tremendously appreciated as I'm dying to use the great sounds of the M-Tron!

Insert the M Tron plug on your instrument track. Keep the input to 'no input' and the output set to the stereo bus unless you want to record the audio from the M Tron to another track.

Are you not getting sound out of the plug, not able to record your performance, not able to bus the audio elsewhere or just confused as to why there is an input option on the Instrument track? It's kind of hard to tell from your post.

If you want to record audio, you should be bussing to an audio track, not an aux track.

First things first; I'd get sound with just an instrument track, then do the bussing.

Are the meters on the instrument track lighting up?

Here's how the i/o should look (basically what Jazzpunk said):

Try this...

I'm away from my machine at the moment but if I remember right I always have to set the input to some sort of audio input before the g-force plug-ins become playable. Try setting the instrument channel to an input and see what happens.

It's something I don't have to do with the Digidesign instruments like hybrid or strike.

I'll check that later today. One more thing: Are there any difference in performance with using the M-Audio keystation thru USB vs. MIDI in on the Digi 002.

Thanks for all your help, I appreciate it!

That's something you'll need to check for yourself. A/B both methods and see which routing delivers the best feel as far as latency is concerned.

John, you're the man!! It finally worked after I set the Input on the Instrument Track to 'Analog 1'........ Weird but FWIW, I also needed to re-install the M-Tron software with the 'VST' option to get it to show up in PT. This was actually pointed out on the M-Audio website and is a bug of sorts......

Thanks agan for all your help....and now on to 'Strawberry Fields'.......
