PC tracking problems!!

I'm trying to help a friend in serious trouble.
She's currently recording a voice talent for a children's cassette book (on a laptop PC...)tutt

The main problems are as follows:
•Occasionally the recording just stops for no obvious reason, not at the same point either.
The target disk is almost empty, so that's not it.
This problem reveals itself in both SoundForge 5&7 as well as in SawPro.
•After having a recording for a couple of minutes the sound goes up in pitch. My theory in that case is that the audio interface "drops the clock", but I haven't heard of this before.
•When trying to save, an error appears; "Unable to save all metadata of the file. Would you like to save it in an external file?" Huh?

Please advice!

In this case it'd be waaay to easy to say "You should have bought a Mac!"

System config:
Compaq Presario
Windows XP Home Ed. (latest updates)
1GB RAM
M-Audio DUO USB (latest driver)

Partly sounds like a hardware problem with the clocking, but the saving files bit sounds like the software. Sorry I have no idea. Good luck!

This definately sounds like a hardware/driver issue. Post this over at the iqsoft user newsgroup (news://mail.cls.at/iqsoft) - perhaps someone over there has used this harware combo.
