Hard Drive for Samples

Hi there...

Can anyone recomend a good hard drive for running orchestral samples and other sounds?

I have a dual gig G4, but will be getting a new Intel mac with in 6 months.

Also I would like to be able to take it with me with my laptop.

I am also concidering the possibilty Of several computers linked together.. i.e.( logic node)..

I score film and tv and I Have a large number of samples I need to have accces too.

thanx

theres plenty of talk about HD if u type in the search field.

remeber to use firewire 800 if u can but 400 if good enough. if u can try getting 7200rpm or more 10000 rpm even better.

dont get lacie silver HD they brake more easily than other HDs . happen to many of the studios ive worked and others have mentioned it here. but the porshe version seems to be good.

iIMO i like Rokstor the best as its quiet , solid and no external power supply. and OWC is also very good.

i have a western digital mybook of 500gb and it works great for my giga colection. its price was very good. like $180 for 500 gigs.

but ran faster when its conec ted via firew 400 than usb2.

u can also buy internal drives and a enclosure , sometimes its cheaper and better.

Yeah I've got a WD 500 gig drive too. It does a great job playing back samples in Reason.

I bought when I still had a G4 Powerbook and now I'm using it on my Mac Pro. Works like a charm!

Which model did you guys go for on the mybooks? I was about to buy a lacie myself as i've never heard of the mybooks. These look awesome.

Nodes won't spread CPU power when using samples, as they primarily take up RAM - not CPU - unlike synths.

Using a 10.000 rpm drive for samples won't make a big difference to a 7.200 rpm one. Unless you do a lot of streaming (as opposed to loading into RAM). 10.000 rpm drives can be more susceptible to problems and are noiser, although things have improved.

Definitely use FireWire.

I use an internal WD raptor for streaming drum and orchestra samples, its never missed a beat (no pun intended)

it was the best availble when I was looking about 2 years back, theres probably something better now. You can only use the smaller raptors in a G5 due to compatibility, which is annoying because mine is pretty much full
